For 60/75 hz you'd be fine, as long as the game or app runs smooth enough on your current cpu. But some games or apps can definitely take advantage of better cpu.
For 1080p/60, a 5700 would be fine, along with your CPU.
For 120hz or higher, it would be best to have something like 7700K + 5700 XT
If you can afford the XT, get that and see how it does, given your cpu. The gpu itself will do very well, the cpu lacking will mostly come down to the game at hand. But i5 in general is simply not what to use for high refresh rates.
7600K + 5700 XT would actually do better at 1440p/60 then it would at 1080p/144
If motherboard and cooling allows, you could OC your cpu.
Yes, it caused issues in a bunch of games. Incapable of even maintaining stable 60FPS with card sitting at ~80% load. In 2160p.
Will work in some games, will not be great in others, definitely will not work for 144HZ monitor. Might be worth looking into cpu upgrade...
I was facing a similar choice earlier this year and chose to upgrade the cpu (to a Ryzen 7 2700), leaving my gpu (an RX 470) to soldier on for a while yet. Even though I have to turn settings down in newer games (like The Division 2), they run very smooth. The gpu is a bottleneck on the system, but not a bad one. No regrets, the cpu upgrade was the right choice for me.
if the 7600k is oc'd to 4.5+ghz it should be ok with most games at 60-144fps
if not lower aa/af settings or res to see if its gpu bottlenecked
