Torn between with the Asus Rog Strix Gaming E z370 and z390 for my i7 8700k
I know everyone says that the z370 is cheaper but the thing is I want the z390 in case I wanna upgrade later down the road without having to waste money for a new motherboard. However I am getting mixed information and reviews saying that the z390 wouldn't be any PC gaming performance if I rely on the z390 when I can use the i7 8700k on the z370. Is there a difference between those? I am not here to overclock it because it runs flawless but I'd like to though but I would need expert help to do that because I am still sketchy with overclocking experience. Moot point I just wanna squeeze best performance and not be picky about it? Thoughts? Advice?

I will be running 16gb 3000mhz on this and a 1080p 60hz but likely upgrading to 1440p or 120hz. I found a monitor that supports 60hz to 100,120 and 1440p. For now I cannot afford a monitor but I gotta get by what I get. I just need an upgrade since my i5 3570k is lagging behind and I have an Ivy Bridge system that is seven years old.

Get the Z370E if you can.
The Only reason to go for a Z390 is if you want a 9700k or 9900k later. Which barely makes sense. You wont really benefit from the Z390 chipset when you use a 8th gen.

I use that exact mbd rn and I OCed my 8700k to 5ghz and let it stay there. No issues at all.
How can I not benefit from it if it works with the 8th generation motherboard then? What is the difference then? Sure I can use the z390 to upgrade the processor. I have no idea how these z370 can last.

The Z390 will most likely be exclusive for the 9th gen CPUs. I dont see Intel using the Z390 again for their next actually new generation.

Featurewise the Z390 does nothing for your CPU that the Z370 cant do. The Z370 can use the 9th gen CPU and the Z390 can use 8th gen CPUs.

The only actual difference is that all Z390s have USB 3.1 ports instead of most Z370s USB 3.0 ports.

There is no definite answer to this. At the end, everyone has to decide what features are worth the extra costs and whats not really that usefull.
To me e.g. I dont care how much faster my USB ports are since I dont use USB Storage of any form. If you use that stuff a lot I would highly advice getting one of the Z390s.
On the other side the Z370E has a USB C port (And a USB port that can be used to flash the bios if yours is broken). Most Z390s dont.

OP,
Asus kinda fell flat on the VRM category in the z370/90s this year (and I'm usually an Asus guy).

Look toward Gigabyte and MSI. You can go top of the line 370 and make out well.

I went Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 7.

Asus only failed the Z390 ones.
If I remember correctly, GN said the Z370 E/F/G/i were actually good which is why the Z390 have been such a disappointment.
And I dont have any VRAM heat issues on my Z370E since I have it. Which is more than a year.

yea i think you are right. my z370-F VRM's are cool as a cucumber with an overclocked 8700k
Yeah, it's comparative mostly.

No big fails or game changers. Just value/pbc analysis.

Just stay well clear of the entry level MoBos regardless. The drop off if severe.
