I have a FX8300 and want to upgrade my CPU
I was thinking to buy an i5 3rd gen, cause I have a motherboard for LGA 1155 it's a MSI H61M-E22W8[br.msi.com]

Maybe just sell your FX and that old i5 mobo and buy something modern.

For some reason AM3+ motherboards and high-end AM3+ CPUs sell for quite a lot online, a lot more then they ar actually worth.

Even something like an AMD Ryzen 3 would be a massive upgrade over the old FX.

I agree with Omega here, but it's gonna depend on your money situation. It's not worth getting an upgrade on the FX platform and a 3rd gen intel is pretty dated too. What exact intel chip is it, and what are the specs?

Unfortunately, once you get into the 'new platform' territory it basically becomes a new build. You'll need a new CPU, mainboard and RAM to match.

But again it depends on your money situation and how bad you need/want the upgrade. Let's take a look at your i5 specs and see how much better that would do vs your FX8300.

As a side note, I still have my FX-8350 and I still love that little chip. It runs hotter than hell and wasn't even great when it was new, but for some reason I have this irrational love for it. Once I upgraded, I threw it into a secondary frankenstein build of old parts and had to use the stock AMD cooler. That sucker was idling in the bios in the mid 50's lol. I use it as a blender render machine, even though it's slow, I can just let it run and it doesn't bog down my main machine.

As thats an older board it likely wont support Ivy out of the box, it will need a BIOS update in order to be compatible.

And with it being an H61, you wont be able to overclock any K CPUs, so you'll be performance limited there as well.

All in all
wouldnt be worth it

So what GPU are we paired up with this FX8300?

I run 2 FX8350 systems with GTX1070 and Rx580 tbh I've not run into any games I play that are problimatic with these PCs.

PPl tend to forget about the gpu when the FX8xxx is mentioned.

Ps FX8350 doesn't idle at 50c unless the pc is borked up.

It had the little stock cooler on it. Come to think of it, it might have been the cooler that came with my old Phenom II. Once i got a proper cooler on it, it was just fine. Went with the 212 evo.

It's better to upgrade the motherboard and get a newer CPU. I would recommend getting a Ryzen CPU if you're on a tight budget. Even if it's only a Ryzen 3; they're miles better than the FX series. I upgraded my GPU from a 960 to a 1060 while I had the FX-8300 and there was literally no difference in FPS. Upgraded the CPU to a Ryzen 5 2600 and now it's miles better. Though if you're willing, I would wait until Ryzen's 3rd Gen series comes out soon later this year. You could find much better CPUs with better deals. Going for an intel CPU rn on a tight budget is pretty rough, especially considering that you'd have to buy a new motherboard as well. But if you do have the money, I would go for intel if what you're mainly doing is gaming.

3rd gen is essentially the same as 2nd gen in terms of performance, so might as well look into 2nd gen. But the thing is 8300 overclocked is comparable to i7 2600k stock, and u're suggesting an i5. Unless you're going to run some old single-threaded apps, it's actually a downgrade.
U want a difference - keep saving money until u can buy some Ryzen R5.

its about a 10% difference between i7 2600 and i7 3770
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-3770-vs-Intel-Core-i7-2600/1979vs620
newer gen has better ipc

3rd gen i7 beats fx8 by quite a bit
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-3770-vs-AMD-FX-8350/1979vs1489

without spending alot he can find a used 3770 and get a nice performace boost

but moving to a 7-8th gen i5 would be a massive increase

He also can overclock his 8300 and get almost the same performance without spending anything. There's just no point in buying Ivy/Sandy for H61 mobo these days.

you cant oc the 8350 to 3rd gen i7 core performance
its ovearll can get close, but nowhere near the single-quad core

Sure, but it's uncommon to see single-threaded apps these days. And considering we're on Steam rn - it's most likely to be used for gaming.

games depend on ipc
gaming + streaming uses more cores but the game itself needs core performance

Slightly overclocked FX-8300 got game performance similiar to stock i7 2600. Period.

He won't benefit from such an "upgrade".

With the price of a new intermediary CPU I can upgrade all my PC, I'm thinking about buy more RAM, actually I have 8gb, and more 1 SSD to put the games, I can overclock my FX8300 to try getting better results. Can anybody say if my MOBO is good for overclock? my MOBO[www.asrock.com]

Make sure your RAM runs dual channel no matter what.
You mobo should allow u to overclock a bit. Tho don't go for CPU multiplier only, as FX 8xxx really benefit from CPU-NB and RAM speeds. I suggest trying the numbers in the video from my previous message, should be just fine.
