Need to upgrade processor and RAM but restricted to LGA1156 and money
Hi, I am trying to upgrade the processor on my computer but I am limited to a LGA1156 socket. I recently upgraded to an Nvidia GTX 960 but my processor is restricting performance as it is an I5-650 @ 3.2GHz, I need to upgrade to something powerful enough to run games that have "Intel Core i5-4690 @ 3.5 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X @ 3.7 GHz" in the minimum requirements but I can't upgrade to a new PC due to cost (anything with the equivalent processor seem to exceed £2500).

I am also trying to work out the best way to upgrade RAM without it costing too much. I currently have 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 664MHz (9-9-9-24) in a 2+2+2+2 formation, I'm not sure which cards would be the best to upgrade to get 12GB or 16GB (I believe the 1st and 3rd are one channel and 2nd and 4th form the second).

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
System Manufacturer: Acer
System Model: Predator G5900
BIOS: Default System BIOS
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Memory: 8GB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

Can anyone point me in the right direction to upgrade these components?

Thanks,
LH.

terrible idea, its like shootign yourself. Ryzen requires fast RAM and A320 limits you to much espacially RAM wise.
what is your maximum budget to upgrade?

It was originally £160 but I am trying to stretch it to £240 - £250. Would the GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 work better with the Ryzen CPUs?

yes - and Ryzen CPU's are really depending on higher RAM clocks because of the Infinity Fabric. Simply said it connects all the cores with each other and enables them to communicate with each other. The Bus speed is always dependign (same) on the RAM speed:

Faster RAM = faster Bus = faster the cores can communciate with each other = the faster they can work

On the long term, that would within that budget be the best value and easiest to upgrade:

alternativly you can swap the Ryzen 2600 for a 1500X which IMO is not worth the few GBP you save. With the sellign of your current RAM + MoBo + CPU you might could afford the 2nd 8GB Stick and use Dual Channel.

Anyway athon is a very poor gaming cpu more of a general duty office/surfer/streamer cpu.

and for that task's it does a perfectly fine job espacially if you count in its price. It is pefect for cheap office or web PC's and has a great use in NUC's

I put a couple refurb x3 450s together just for that they work fine streaming and surfing.
Would 2400MHz be too slow for RAM? They go up to 4600 MHz but they cost a lot more.

There's no way I can afford an MSI 450.

Depends what CPU you're going to use.

If it's Intel CPUs, then it's fine with 2400mhz, even 2133mhz.
But if it's an AMD Ryzen CPU, then you're going to want above 3000mhz, otherwise you're going to perform pretty bad.

And, usually, in the 4000+area, they're slower than 2,400 - 3,600mhz area, because their timings are looser.

So, what CPU do you intend to use?
I'm planning to get a Ryzen 5 1500X. Do I also need to change the cooler or would the current air cooled rad be enough?

I'm going to be totally honest;
I know what it's like to have no money, and buying 'cheap' now, will only make it worse.
If you want bang for buck, and good futureproofing, get the Ryzen 5 2600.
It's a little more expensive, but it's way better, and will last you longer.

If you try to save money, you'll only regret it down the line, pick something good up, that will last you a while.
All it takes is a little while more saving.

I don't know what you mean, the AMD stock cooler? Or an AIO that you have?
I mean the cooler that was on the I5-650.

What cooler is that? Stock cooler? If so, then no, you can't reuse it.
(But the Ryzen CPUs come with a cooler anyway, that's quite good.)
No the cooler will not be usable on the new system
If the cooler is as old as that system then you'll need a modern cooler as well to fit the new board

I't will cost me at least £400 in total for the 2600 as the RAM would need to be a higher speed as well. I can at most stretch to £280

My library consists of games that tend to either use an older graphics engine or tend to be limited.

From what I've read, the AMD processors sold on Amazon don't come with a cooler and are extra cost.

Incorrect

Searching for Ryzen 2600 brings up every available Ryzen and it specifically states "With Wraith Spire LED Cooler"

Meaning it COMES with one

If the CPU you are looking at doesnt come with one it will say so

The majority below the 2400 don't say the cooler is included and several responses on the UK site state that no fan is included. I'm guessing these are air cooled, otherwise I assume I would need to buy a seperate radiator unit as the GPU is currently air cooled.

The 2600 with Stealth cooler is on offer but with the higher speed RAM the total comes up to £343.63. I might be able to do it as long as the offers don't end just before I can lend the money, which is rather typical of this situation.
