Why does my 144hz monitor say 119hz in windows settings when set to 120hz?
When I set my 144hz VG278Q monitor to 120hz for some reason in the advanced display settings it says I have 119hz. Any explanations to this will be appreciated.

How is it connected to your videocard? DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort?

Because it loves to round up to the lower number. Simple as that.
You can check your actual refresh rate here https://www.testufo.com/refreshrate
You can also tweak your refresh rate a bit with this https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU , tho it technically is overclocking, thus it's your responsibility if u decide to use it

Does your monitor support 1080p 144Hz over Dual Link DVI? Check the manual. Most like you'll need a DisplayPort connection to be able to utilize the 144Hz refresh rate.

Theres no problem when its set to 144Hz but when i set it to 120Hz using the Nvidia control panel it says 119Hz in the Windows settings.

I think that's your issue. Not all cables are created equal. More FPS means more data which needs more bandwidth. Use display port for best results.

pretty sure DVI also only supports a max refreshrate of 120HZ if I remember correctly as well. So yeah DP would really help.

I think even HDMI would be better than DVI.

Well DVI just supports higher resolutions then HDMI. But DP is the best out of all of them. It's a damn shame I don't have a DP or HDMI port on my monitor.

Lol u guys clearly didn't even read his post, because it's nothing to do with bandwidth.

ok, fair enough.

I think it's just a reporting error. Kinda how my CPU speed reads 4.695 when in reality it's set to 4.7. It's customary to just round off that gnat's ass of difference to a nicer number. So 119hz really means 120 hz and it's probably just a reporting error. It's not like 119 hz is a standard frame rate like 60, 120, 144, 240 ect.

But im able to set it to 144Hz just fine 120Hz refresh rate is just an option I have that I use to make 60fps look better.

Well ♥♥♥♥, after I looked it up DVI can infact do 144hz but no audio. I learned something.

I think the 119 is just a reporting error. Kinda like how my all core boost (8700k) is supposed to be 4.7 ghz but it gets reported at 4.695ghz. It's close enough that the convention is just to round up. Maybe try running something like Riva Statistics Tuner in game to see if you actually hit 120 fps in the least demanding games you have.

Are you running your display at 1080p?
