Why does my 144hz monitor say 119hz in windows settings when set to 120hz?

When I set my 144hz VG278Q monitor to 120hz for some reason in the advanced display settings it says I have 119hz. Any explanations to this will be appreciated.

Well ♥♥♥♥, after I looked it up DVI can infact do 144hz but no audio. I learned something.

I think the 119 is just a reporting error. Kinda like how my all core boost (8700k) is supposed to be 4.7 ghz but it gets reported at 4.695ghz. It's close enough that the convention is just to round up. Maybe try running something like Riva Statistics Tuner in game to see if you actually hit 120 fps in the least demanding games you have.

Are you running your display at 1080p?

To your original question, I just looked at the panel in windows you're talking about. I had never actually looked there before. I have a 144hz panel set to 144hz, and I'll be damned if it doesn't say 143 in that advanced display settings window.

I'm convinced it's just windows being a little confused and mis-reporting the actual refresh rate. If you wanted to be sure you need to do some testing with some other programs. I use Riva Statistics Tuner because it came with MSI afterburner but there are other progs out there to view your frame rate in real time in the corner of your screen. I'd set your least demanding game to low low settings and see if you ride solid at 120 fps. But like I said, I've never had any issues actually in game of not reaching 144 (depending on how demanding the title is of course). So I'm pretty sure windows is just confused.

Oh I've never heard that before, but I've never noticed any issues either. Might be a driver issue or something. Have you noticed issues at 144hz watching youtube on your panel?

Oh I've never heard that before, but I've never noticed any issues either. Might be a driver issue or something. Have you noticed issues at 144hz watching youtube on your panel?

I think ive seen it gitter with 60fps videos before and I know for a fact it gitters when games are set to 60fps when im in 144Hz.

Apologies for bumping an old thread but I was looking for an answer to this as I had the same issue this week. My DP lead was good, my GPU is good, but 144hz wouldn't show as an option in Windows or NVIDIA Control Panel. It turned out that AMD Freesync was active on the monitor, once this was disabled through the monitor settings, I could increase from 119.XXhz to 144hz using Windows.

i have been using 144 hz through dvi in windows 7 but, to use that frequency in newer operating systems i needed monitor drivers. without drivers i was restricted to 60 hz.

My monitor refresh rate fluctuates between 135Hz and 165Hz if I make a video 21:9 full screen

In games it stays locked at 165Hz

It's a variable refresh rate. Oleds do this more than other monitors, but when the Hz value changes, you will not notice it at all, guaranteed.
