You don't need such an expensive motherboard for this CPU. Yet the cheaper Intel boards may not work with the 9700k if the BIOS it isn't running a BIOS with supprot for this CPU.
I would recommend a Ryzen 2600x over the i5 9600k. The Ryzen is cheaper and has significantly better multi core performance. The motherboard for the Ryzen will also cost half as much while it's garanteed to work with the CPU.
And if the leaks are true you will be able to upgrade to a really nice CPU later on the AM4 platform.
The 2nd gen i5 is good but quite old and since you wanna upgrade and wanna go with the current gen i5, nothing wrong with it. Do it.
Setup is fine, would just add a decent cooler, like the dark rock pro, cryorig h7 or so to the i5-k (if u have no current decent cooler)
Aaaand maybe a new psu, but depends on your current one.
The extrem is ~ 160 chocolate coins.
Nay, not 8th gen, op is aiming for the 9600k.
If he has the money, he can buy it.
I would min. buy a asus prime which is ~ 130-140 fruity biscuits, but thats my opinion.
So buy it.
For example -
More or less, the purpose of the cpu is just to drive the graphics card.
I had an i7-2600, gtx970, 120hz 1080p monitor. Games I wanted to play were rpg's, WW2 shooters, strategy like civ. So those components were moslty fine for 60fps except for graphically modded skyrim and new AAA rpg's. Upgraded the 970 to a 1080ti. Now I get 80-100fps on mostly everything.
(I also have an i7-8700k, rtx2070 pc as well, but I rarely use it.)
There are several videos on youtube discussing upgrading 2500k, 2600k etc, such as -.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frNjT5R5XI4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4chk3fWb6xI
But it all starts with identifying the games you intend playing and the monitor you will play on. You don't just go out and buy parts.
Since your goals are not very high, stick a while to your 970 and upgrade the rest to the 9th gen i5.
Note that the connectors on the old samsung monitors need to be checked against any new gpu you might buy. There shouldn't be a problem but it's a potential trap.
BF5 gpu benchmarks here -

FH4

So both are reasonably lightweight. You could overclock the 970. Or if you wanted a big step up in gpu maybe the rtx2070 and get BF5 for free.
For cpu, you can get an i7-2700k on ebay for $200, sometimes even a complete pc with a 2700k.
Or step up -

https://www.pcgamer.com/battlefield-5-update-aims-to-boost-ray-tracing-performance-up-to-50-percent/
cpu, 16gb ddr4 3000+ ram, mobo, cooler, gpu can be expensive but if you have the funds the 9600k and rtx2070 would be a good setup.
There is an rtx2060 due for release soon which would be a step up from a 970 I think. So you could get the cpu now and wait. How much would a free copy of BF5 be worth?
edit -
this is what you would go close to getting with your current setup (the i5-2500k is the bottleneck)
