CPU temperature
I am running an i7 2600 (non-k) @ 3.4 GHz, 16 GGB DDR3 , GTX 1080
I have set the multiplier to 42x so sometimes my CPU clock hits 4.1 GHz

CPU Temperature goes above 90 'C. In Assassin's Creed Odyssey it's about 99 'C

Should I invest in an air cooler ? Will it have any significant impact?
Thanks!

Would be a mix. Even if you had just cleaned it and reapplied thermal paste you'd see an improvement. Glad you r temps are more acceptable now.

That's not a healthy temperature for the CPU. Intel states a TCASE temperature limit of 72.6°C. So you should really improve the cooling.
How it can be improved, hard to say. We don't know what exactly you did to OC it and what cooling it currently has.

When did you last clean it? Dust build up can clog heatsinks reducing cooling and also slow fans down reducing their effectiveness and reduce cooling even more.

Current cooler?
Case + fan setup?

If your case as bad AF putting a better CPU cooler in won't help that much. Coolers need good case airflow to supply them with cooler air.

I have a corsair case with decent ventilation. There are 3 fans in the case. Cleaned it last week. Idle CPU temp is about 46'C. GPU temperature in game is ok; about 65' C. Not sure if I should get an air cooler or a liquid cooler.

Same cpu here but 1080ti. I bought a gammaxx 300 which keeps the cpu cool. My cpu will do 4.3ghz. Any stack cooler with a large single fan should work.

liquid, i have good results with coolermaster, but did you also put some new thermal paste on your cpu ?
Cheapest way to check if thats already enough to see if your temperature will drop.

i will explain why i choose for liquid cooling.
You can provide real cheap extra cooling to the radiator to place extra fans on the other site of the radiator.
Just a cheap solution what works real good, because the air flow goes way faster trough the radiator.

definetly invest in a water cooler if your going to run that high an O.C them temps are to high.
99c ouch!

Are you using the stock cooler that came with the CPU? If you are, get at least a Hyper 212 EVO.
You don't need liquid cooling, and it doesn't make a huge impact as liquid takes longer to build up heat and retains heat for longer because science.
A good Noctua brand air cooler surpasses the cooling performance of most 120 and 240mm AIO liquid coolers and often cost less as well.

With such an old CPU, it might be worthwhile to reseat the heatsink/redo the thermal paste. It doesn't last forever. And it could be the cheapest simplest solution.

Thanks everyone! Just did the surgery today and got rid of intel's stock cooler. There was quite some dust and thermal dirt between the cpu and heat sink. I cleaned it all with rubbing alcohol and installed a new thermal take cooler. Idle temperature is ~30 'C and in game (Odyssey) it is ~63 'C (Previously about 100 !).
Don't know if it was because of the dirt and dried up thermal alone or Intel stock coolers are useless :D
