CPU/GPU safe temperature
Hello. I've been searching for few hours now about safe temperature but I'm still not 100% sure about it. I'm mostly playing with laptop plugged in to get more fps but that comes with much higher temperatures. I was playing quite old game now - Flatout2 and I got about 70-80° C on GPU and up to 88° C on CPU. I'm using GPU-Z to monitor GPU temp and CoreTemp to monitor CPU temp. I just want to be sure that these temperatures won't cause damages or decrease battery life span that much.

Using Acer A515-41G-125M - It's not for gaming but it's good enough for me. About 2 month old.

iGPU: R7 Graphics
GPU: RX 540 - that's what most of my games are using
CPU: AMD Quad-Core A12-9720P

More info if needed:
OS: Win 10 64bit
Ram: 8gb ddr4
1000gb hdd, about 600gb left
battery lasts about 2-4 hours. Depends on usage.

That's pretty hot. Still, under 90 shouldn't hurt the processors, though you might be starting to shorten the life a bit. The actual point of failure for both is probably more than 110C. The computer might already be throttling the clock speed to manage heat. If not, it's probably close.

You aren't running it on a soft surface like a blanket or pillow are you? You might want a laptop cooling pad. They're just a hard tray with some fans built in to make sure there is airflow for the laptop, and move some cold air over the bottom to help out.

But laptops also run hotter than PC's, which is what I'm used to.

As to the battery, we'll, they degrade as a matter of course. Left alone at about 20C, I think you expect to loose about 10% capacity a year for lithium. Use and heat speed that up, yes. You typically expect a well used battery like a cellphone to have decent performance for 2-3 years. If you're laptop allows it, you could pull the battery out while plugged in if it bothers you (some laptops do allow this, but I'm not sure all or even most do. Some laptops also use the battery and mains power together to boost performance).

I usually just place a book or something under it and lie in bed. I'm in relatively hot room so it could also be the reason. Always when I can feel the heat I let it to cool and then use it again.

And which cooling pad would you recommend? Preferably something cheap.

And what do you think is worse for batter, leaving it plugged in whie gaming - more heat or playing on battery - discharges fast?

EDIT//: Played same game again (for about 20 min) and got even higher temperatures: http://prntscr.com/mcvt0v.

It's weird that R7 has higher temp even though it should be using RX 540.

You might check out one of those laptop cool plates with an extra fan to force feed more cool air through the bottom.

Also, if you've had it for a year or two, or have furry pets (cats, dogs ect) or someone in the house smokes, you might want to open up the laptop and clean out any dust or grime. Just get a can of compressed air and take it outside. I've used an actual air compressor in my garage for years but apparently those can have a bit of moisture in the line which would be bad when you turn the PC back on.

I'll look for something. I have this laptop for about 2 months so I don't think there will be that much dust inside.

I bought cooling pad like you said and temperature is better. CPU temp did not exceed 79° C (mostly was at 60-70° C) while playing and GPUs were at about 65° C. GPUs 48-50° C while idle and CPU 49-62° while idle.

Also I noticed that when playing both GPUs have high usage and integrated one heats faster. Is there a way to make games use only dedicated gpu?

afaik games will only use one gpu. the integrated gpu would be getting hot as the cpu gets hot since it is inside the cpu. if the dedicated gpu is being utilized then the igpu shouldn't be utilized

When playing both GPUs are at 50-60% usage. When idle dedicated gpu is at 0% and integrated at max 30%.

It was just weird as it did not happen before my problem with driver so I asked to be sure.

If you are thinking of getting a cooling pad maybe look at videos and stuff. It looks like some laptops get no effect and others limited. Try elevating the laptop so that it has room to get rid of heat underneath it and see what your temps are. Maybe think about where the air to system comes in from. There are pictures of the laptop open on the internet.

Well that's better, 79 max on the CPU is within the realm of sanity. Maybe there's some wacky dual GPU thing where your lappy will use the dedicated GPU as well as the APU to get the most performance in gaming as possible? Does such a thing exist?

It should run on the APU when idling at the desktop to save power, especially when running on battery.

the am3 and fm athlons had a max of 62-72c before they would throttle
not sure on the am4 athlon, but most likely 72c

Modern Intel and Ryzen have no issues running all day @ 85*C before possible issues could occur related to heat

Max temp on that cpu is 90c btw.

Does anyone know of app that could show me temp of CPU in-game? I know about MSI Afterburner but it only showed temp of dedicated GPU which is lowest.

Go to Settings and set things you wish to see onscreen(OSD), like cpu
