NVIDIA PhysX on a AMD GPU.
Hi so i'm just here with a quick question.
i used to have a NVIDIA Geforce but i got a new pc a while back.
Whilst cleaning up for storage i noticed i still have NVIDIA PhysX installed from 2016
i now have a AMD GPU Radeon R9 200 series and i was wondering if there is any reason not to remove the NVIDIA Physx.
Its currently occupying 70 MB for no purpose it seems, not that much but still every bit of room will help.

Just wondering aloud if there is any reason to keep it on my PC, the main reason is ofcourse for games (Dead By Daylight now running on Unreal engine 4 in particular) but if its not being used/and/or updated at all then there's no need to keep it.

Glad to read your response!

Gr Gio

Some games require PhysX, those games will run it on the CPU instead of the GPU in a system with an AMD GPU.

PhysX isn't a Nvidia only thing. The benefit Nvidia has with PhysX over AMD is that Nvidia is capable of using the GPU for PhysX which can improve performance. #TotallyProprietary

Thanks for your quick response, is there then any reason to update said NVIDIA PhysX?
Even though it will run on the CPU instead of the GPU?
And maybe it sounds weird (I'm not that experienced about/with Hardware/software) might it be better to uninstall this old version and reinstall the game (in this case Dead By Daylight) and let it install the latest version on its own?

Thanks for your response!

Considering it's more than likely used by your Radeon graphics card or another game on your pc I would just leave it on there personally since 70 MB can't possibly be that much to be concerned about. If at some point it is then maybe it's time for some system maintenance (optimization/defragment--good idea on a regular basis anyway) or a larger hard drive. I do believe this time of year is when they are on sale if I'm not mistaken.

Just download and run DDU app and wipe out everything for Nvidia via the safe mode, reboot option. Then go download and install the latest Nvidia physx runtime from their website

You won't use the PhysX driver on an AMD GPU anyways. Use DDU and clear it out to avoid any driver conflicts.

You'll use the PhysX runtime, if the game doesn't have Nvidia PhysX exclusive effects, but each game that uses the runtime will install it as needed. No manual install necessary.

GPU based PhysX is dead. All current games that use the PhysX engine are CPU based. There is no need for you to install any driver for it on your AMD card Think of it like any other physics engine now.

For example : Havoc.

Yeah, hardware GPU/PPU accelerated PhysX is basically dead, but support still exists and any developer can implement it, if they wish.

The driver for PhysX would do nothing with an AMD GPU. However, the PhysX runtime, which is the software implementation of PhysX with CPU calculations, will be installed anyways when installing any game that uses it.

Havok isn't dead...

Many games still require the Nvidia physx runtime be presently installed regardless
