This makes up scaling from 1080 to 4k really easy. Each pixel at 1080 maps perfectly to a square of 4 pixels at 4k.
To do intermediate resolutions requires some math to map the provided signal to the 4k screen, so the TV is likely cutting the refresh rate because it can't do the calculations fast enough.
But what the control panel is doing, I think, is converting the 1440 resolution for example into a 4k signal that the TV wants. Your GPU is doing the image scaling instead of the TV, so the TV can work at full speed.
And no, it won't harm the tv. :)
This has brought me to another question.
When in this setting, my TV settings say my resolution is 1080P, but my PC says it's 1440P. How can I tell for sure?
See, when I set up the custom res I could only do it in with the resolution in 1920x1080. If I tried to create it in 4K, I just got no signal.
Now I'm confused. is my PC in 1440P in my games or 1080P?
Update:
Silly me. I just realised I don't need custom resolutions. I just needed to put the HDMI into the HDR HDMI connector. Now 2560x1440 shows as a 60Hz resolution!
Sorted.
Just need a new HDMI switch box that does 4K and HDR. My curren one doesn't do HDR. Any recommendations?
I need this as I also run an Xbox One X and a 4K Blu-ray, but out of the 4 HDMI connectors on the TV, only two of them support HDR.
1 I bought a HDMI 2.0 10 foot cable from Amazon
2 I plugged it into the HDMI 1 port on my TV. The HDMI 2 and 3 ports did NOT let go over 30 HZ or 44 HZ when forced by Nvidia custom resolution. So the HMDI 1 port is a higher quality port on my TV
I suggest a HDMI 2.0 cable, as short as possible to reach your stuff. If too long, [perhaps 15 feet or more?] You begin to lose capabilities such as polarity [the ability to reverse the cable and still get a picture] or max HZ or max resolutions 8k etc
If you want to be top of the line you can try HDMI 2.1 but that is more for 8k. But can also affect contrast, color and picture quality I think?
Just DONT get HDMI 1.0
