1080 GTX too noisy... need to undervolt ?
Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing some weird things.

I can launch a game recently released that isn't demanding a lot of resources and suffer from nothing in term of noise and heat. But launching an old game, now deleted from Steam due to its next relaunch on PS4, like The Last Remnant makes my Nvidia GTX 1080 (in a Razer Laptop 2017) go crazy and fully boost to 5GHZ (following what MSI Afterburner tells me)

And I'm really tired of it because it happens with some games an it becomes crazily noisy. i've heard about undervolting, gave it a try with a few benchmarks but finish by wasting a lot of time for nearly nuts. Idle, this computer has already 55°C and with Unigine Heaven benchmark it tops at 89°C.

I've read that 5GHZ in game is not a problem for a Nvidia GTX 1080, but the noise is still a problem and I don't know what to do. Even that Two Point Hospital is making my Razer go crazy... Can I switch on/off some options in the nvida control pannel ? I don't know much about that but if it can help me without having to risk a death crash of the machine...

Thanks in advance.

EDIT :

Concerning "The Last Remnant", the solution, as I owe a Nvidia GPU is to go in the Nvidia panel, and set the 3D parameters for the program itself and choose VSync "Activate"(and not anything else, just "Activate"

EDIT 2 :

Concerning "Aarklash Legacy", I ran into a starting error resulting in overheating but it was a bug. Needed to force VSync like said before and go change the Compatibility and choose Windows 7 parameters to keep a clean 60 fps and not a crazy 125 + frozen screen + overheating...it was my day...

Concerning "Ni No Kuni II", Forcing VSync just does the job ;-) It's heating a bit but not as crazy as I have experimented before.

EDIT 3 :

Ok as mentioned on page 2-3, Alien Isolation managed to make my Razer abruptly shut down....:-p

So Like said, I'm going to clean and repaste, wee'll see what we can manage to accomplish...And then, undervolting if anything...

How much FPS do you have in The last Remnant? You can use the Steam Overlay FPS counter in Steam --> Settings --> In-Game
It's not like the game is demanding, i've played it back on a singlecore CPU and a Geforce 6800GT back when it was released.

Hey, thanks for answering me :-) I just checked and it begins at 30 FPS at launch and while looking pretty on the main screen, it goes up to 1842 FPS
Which means there is no V-Sync active. Meaning your computer puts everything it can into the game. If you have a 60Hz display you're wasting processing power on 1782 frames your display can't render.

Try this:

Thank you I will read it and give it a try I tell you what when I have checked it

OK I did what is said for VSync and indeed it was not activated. But it has not changed the situation. The only difference is that instead of jumping right from 30 to 1847, it makes a halt at 1654 and then get crazy eventually. I checked if VSync was correctly enabled in Nvidia pannel and yes it is. Well it's not like I need to play that game in particular but it's a shame I can't and I have the same problem with a smaller game like Aarklash Legacy and I had the same problem on my last machine at home so I just can't figure it out... That said, At home I've got an Ati for a GPU and it's as noisy as a Gigantic Engine room at full speed...maybe not that much though :-) thanks anyway !

SOLVED !

I found an old conversation here on Steam from 2013 and another one from 2015. Both suggested this and it worked : if you owe an Nvidia, open the Nvidia panel nd instead of setting general 3D parameters, I had to select the program (in this case The Last Remnant) and force V Sync by selecting "Activate" (and not anything else, just "Activate")... Ouf :-P

I would like to thank everyone of you who answered me kindly and advised me. I keep in mind the Thermo Pasta for when the laptop will be out of warranty and cleaning it anytime soon.

Let's try if Ni No kuni II will run smoothly with the same setting...and Aarklash too (for what it's worth I can't say)

Ok so With Ni No Kuni 2 it's the same : no craziness in the FPS by forcing V Sync. Now I need to find a good solution for cooling the lap top and I don't think my cooling pad will suffice but I'll run some tests and see what I can do...If you guys have any idea for this...

That said, if the VSync corrected my main problem, I see that the gpu climbs to 5GHZ in game, is that normal ? The temps is only 64 by the way so it's a relief instead of crazy 87 and 1700 ps (constant 60 now)

For those who might be interested, I edit my first post for every game I had some issues with so just in case there is one you have problems with if I can help I'l gladly do so :-)

Sorry to multi-post here but I've got a quick question though :

Can someone explain me why my GPU has to jump to 5ghz instead of 500 mhz or less while downloading a game for example. It happens that just now it has increased to 2999 then 5000mhz then climbed down then up again like a yo yo...Is it a way to ask me for a vacation ? :-)

You shouldn't have to activate v-sync in order to keep your laptop cool enough, you should be able to utilize your laptop to the fullest. To reduce temps there are several methods but I recommend undervolting, not only is it free but it doesn't reduce performance.

You're looking at the Memory clock. Whenever gpu is under any load, the memory will jump to 10000 (2x 5000 because DDR, which stands for Double Data Rate, makes the effective speed 2 times the shown amount)

What you should look at, is the Core Clock.

I'm waking this topic up because I experienced something rich for the first time my laptop went out for overheating.... I mean, It just shut down and thanks to God I could restart it...

I was playing Alien Asiolation, I know the game does go hot with such a game but now...well no more Alien for this Razer....I think I'm off to undervolt it or at least avoid that game on this laptop... :-(

All I can really recommend is that you undervolt the CPU.

Dried thermal paste with a 1080? Unlikely.
When i got my msi gaming x 1080 i had to change the paste in 2 months it was like ash and i got them at launch
Ok I'll give it a serious try. Do you have any guide or advice about the software to use to do that ? I heard about Afterburner but I'm kinda new to undervolting so I don't want to mess everything up... thnks for answering by the way :-)
Hmm interesting about the pasta too... jeez I'll have to have a look at this this week-end.

If you are still under warranty send it and have them clean your laptop. Orr you can watch some disassembly videos of your laptop then follow those process. Then clean the laptop with compressed air can + maybe replace thermal paste.
@jefedemuchanina : it has only one year and yes it's still under warranty...so @Agnes Washington, you suggest to send it to them ? hmmm... I have already replaced pasta on my desktop pc motherboard and installed, removed two gpu so I'm not afraid of touching this pc but you are maybe right... I'll definitely have to clean it. Ok a lot of work to perform.

@Aura : thanks for the lin, I'll check that :-)

Again, I thank all of you for answering me, now I'll get to work and come back when I have figured out something. Now, I'll have to buy some stuff ;-)

If I have to replace the thermo pasta, is there a trademark particularilly good in the market ?
