Packet loss, how to trace the cause?
Thanks to Rocket League I now have an answer to my laggy gameplay when I have an otherwise fantastic connection. Apparently it's packet loss, not a bad connection, so how do I figure out what the cause is? I don't want to know how to fix it, just figure out the cause.

Packet loss = a bad connection.

Use cable instead of Wifi, that is all you can really do on your end.
Well then I'm just going to give up on gaming online then if that's all there is to it, because that's something I can't get at the moment. I can download a 20 gb game in less than an hour. Hows that a bad connection?

bad connection does not mean slow connection. bad connection means the interface between computer and data transfer device such as router or modem. wifi altho fast can be very succeptable to interference. this interference can result in packet loss or lag. a wired ethernet connection and a good quality router\modem is the only way to minimise packet loss

alternatively you can try to use your routers Qos service if it has one to make your connection to it a priority connection which can result in far less packet loss when other users are connected to the same router

Could I simply be at the range of my wifi circle? I've often thought this might be the cause, though I've never moved my PC to test it.
You can try moving closer to the router. If the Wifi connection is indeed the issue you will most likely see a nice improvement.

are you using dual band wifi? if so and you are using the faster 5ghz connection you might opt for the 2.4ghz connection for greater range. it is far slower in terms of download speed but it has greater range and from what i have seen better ability to penetrate walls and such due to being lower frequency
Could be something with your wifi or adapter configuration. Do you see anything off with testmy.net comprehensive tests?
Other possibilities could be system/software related.
Most probably it is not your WiFi what caused packet loss. Try to run MTR utility (or WinMTR if you on Windows) to find bad hop.

Yes thats a good way to test if its wifi issues at range.

I'd also say while next to router try an ethernet cable. If it works fine you could purchase a pair of powerline adapters that basically uses your homes electrical cabling as ethernet cables. You plug one into wall powersocket near the router and connect it by a small ethernet cable. You plug the into wall powersocke by your PC and connect it by the ethernet cable. No more wifi interference, loss or drop outs and no longer ethernet cable road your home.

Cheap kit. Caps at 100mbps. May say gigabit but only has a 10/100 ethernet port. The gigiabit is in reference to data back and forth using multiple devices.

If you have or want speed above 100mbps just make sure they have gigabit ethernet ports. You can get some with passthrough sockets so you don't lose a wall socket and some that doubles as a wifi booster, good if signal on phone sucks where you computer is.
i have packet loss with rocket league over a wired connection. used to never have this issue. i think the problem has to do with their servers.
This might sound stupid but if you have neighbors nearby you might have interference due to them being on your WiFi channel?
Other devices in my room seem to operate ok on the internet. My iPad and iPhone for example never have problems watching video or streaming music.

If your router is somewhat modern it should switch to a less congested channel automatically.

Yes, devices on the same channel and several channels above or below the one you are using will interfere with your Wifi.

I think OP should check his router config and check to see if it is set to "Auto" or try manually changing it and seeing if he get's better results or contacting his ISP.

Or doing a router reset.

Try and use a networking tool to lower the packet size or I think it's mtu settings in router or cmd. Fiber uses bigger packets so when one is lost it's a nightmare gaming, smaller packets reduce lost but not all the time, it's just a tip.
