Pc locks up randomly, cannot find reason why
Without notice, my pc will freeze and require a hard reset (pushing power button for 10 or so seconds), unsure what term to use for it (deadlock or lock up)

Sometimes ill get a bsod, sometimes it just freezes and a slight static sound plays in my headset

Ive ran memtest a few times, with drastically different results, first time i got 288 errors on test 5 (memtest later froze)

2nd time i ran it, no errors (runtime: 2hrs)

3rd time i ran it, 304 errors in test 7 (runtime: 8 hours) only 2 passes

Ram is corsair vengeance 8x4 32gb
Mobo is asus maximus hero viii (bios is from 2016, but unsure if thats the issue since its been going on since 2016)
CPU is i7 6700
Psu is corsair 850i

Cannot pinpoint what the problem is, i looked up test 5 errors and i read that it was CPU and psu related, i dont know if its something software related like sound cards or some other obscure ♥♥♥♥
Ive heard that it could be ram clock speeds or even my ram is not compatible with my mobo
( which seems odd)

Ive heard the whole spectrum of what it could be but nothing is helping
So what do i do?

If you have the BSOD that means it's probably the CPU. Now noticing that you can't overclock your CPU shows that something is for sure wrong. It could even be the operating system and you might have to reinstall Windows. Try possibly turning your voltage on your CPU down a bit. Maybe that'll help. For me my i7 4790K runs fine at 1.05 volts at 4.0 GHz. So maybe try turning it down as low as possible and that might fix the issues. If all fails your CPU may be damaged, or just reinstall Windows first, before concluding to your CPU being damaged.

make sure you also use prime95 to stress your system to make sure it is stable.

You are yourself already saying exactly what the issue is, it's the RAM.

If Memtest86 gives any errors the RAM is dead. It can take a few passes before Memtest86 will run in to issues.

But one memtest showed no errors and one pass

But then the ones with errors ended up sending me down paths such as:
Clock speed may be wrong
Ram and mobo not compatible
Driver issues
Sound drivers
Voltage

So im really confused

I have had bsods happen, once it was every 5 minutes due to chrome, so i use firefox now

I do not overclock anything

Im fine with reinstalling windows

Also cpu voltage was 1.136 in bios

Ill do Prime95 next time im pn my pc

When was the last time you checked for Windows Updates? Also, what GPU are you using?
Ultima modifica da TehSpoopyKitteh; 14 nov 2018, ore 16:56
As already mentioned, almost definitely the ram, as you should get zero errors every pass.

Try removing one module at a time, if the problem goes away, you've found the faulty module/s.

This. Could just require a reslot anyways. Just OP, if you pull any ram stick, put the case down by a power socket, and touch the screw on the cover to the wall socket while touching the case with the other hand. Then pull the ram sticks.

gtx1080

I checked for windows update like last week, and i think it installed an update yesterday

yeah ill try a friends ram in my pc too, although I dont know if going from 32 to 16 will have any bais
my friend will also probably use my ram to see if he gets the same problems

yeah ill turn of my pc and wait 10 mins before trying anything, Ill also wear an anti static wrist band if i can find it

also i just touch the metal panel of my case, the one that i remove to get to the inside, is that alright?

The screw in wall socket is grounded. Touch any bare metal in case(while obviously unplugged and after power button is pressed for a few seconds while unplugged) while also touching screw in light switch plate, or wall socket and then don't shuffle your feet. Then you should be neutral and same charge as case. Mobo standoffs are connected to mobo, so this also neutralizes the common rail on the mobo = you should not need the wrist band as long as you do not move.

The best way to check your ram is to try 1 stick at a time. I have issues with the slots themselves before, hense why you try 1 stick at a time, then 2 etc.

Some mobo's require ram to be in certain slots. Just do memtest on each stick, 2 or 3 times in first slot. If no errors, move to next slot(or 3rd slot for those other mobos). If your mobo lets you use slot 2 and 4 alone, then go ahead and try them next.

I bet you will find a bad stick. And no, 16gb is not bad. You might even be able to run 24gb, albiet the 3rd might run on single channel.

After doing single sticks, try doubleing up to be dual channel. If you find 0 errors, start checking into setting your latency rates and voltages in the bios assuming you have a bios that can do that.

Also, I have had luck once with old pc3200 DDR2? Ram where lowering the voltage by 8% stopped the error. No idea why.
Ultima modifica da rotNdude; 15 nov 2018, ore 8:08
So im doing a test on all 4 slots with each stick of ram, and in doing the test 2-3 times

Thats about 32 memtests, so about 3 or so days of diagnosing, since each memtest takes around 2 hours to complete

And im looking for the stick or sticks that produce nothing but errors? And all the other sticks should have no error what so ever?

It will take less time with only 1 stick. If it's taking that long you def have a bad stick.

Edit* You can try that first, might be worth a shot, also might be worth a shot trying just 2 sticks @16gb for now and see if issue persists. If it does, try other 2.

Ah, i just got a bsod now, not a freeze

All my bsods seem to be kernel related, that mean a bad install of windows? Or still bad ram?

Or both?

Is the error code like 0x00000000 and only zeros?

Wait, what type of PSU do you have?

It was a kernel error stop code

I didnt record the code this time haha, got tired of it
