What kind of games can this run?
Old laptop kicked the bucket so I found a cheaper one that I was hoping to play games such as Doom 2016 and Rust. It's an Acer aspire 315-42 specs are as follows:
- Ryzen 5 3500u
- vega 8
- 12gb DDR4 SDRAM
- 256gb SSD

no dedicaed gpu, stick to gaves over 10 years old
Find something with dedicated graphics card, GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1650 minimum, better if you can. Also just 256 GB SSD will be full very fast, look for at least 500 GB.
Integrated graphics will be a little rough for modern 3D games. I don't think you will have a very good time in Doom 2016 or especially Rust. You could game on old games better or modern Indie games with 2d or pixel graphics.

From the previous poster benchmark link, it looks like if you drop down to 720p all low settings you can pull ~30 fps in some games. League of Legends would run like a champ though. Doom shows ~25 fps on low settings 720p

My laptop has similar specs but I also have a dedicated GPU (RX 560), Ryzen 5 3550H and Vega 8 graphics. You can get one of these new for around $700 bucks - ASUS FX505DY.

If that's over your budget, try to find something with a dedicated graphics card instead of integrated graphics. So something with Nvidia 1050 or Radeon RX something cards. A dedicated graphics card is going to fare a lot better for gaming.

Right, Doom showing ~25 fps on 720 low settings and Rust is not going to be a good time. Doom generally runs like a champ on the biggest potato machines, and 25 fps is struggling.

Rust even on a good PC is a struggle sometimes, it's pretty unoptimized.

They going to optimize it next year when they release for console. took them long enough
I'm a little confused, I was able to run doom 2016 (albeit on lowest settings) on my older laptop that had 7th gen i5, intel graphics, and HDD. I found a link of a ryzen 5 3500u vega 8 running games like PUBG, GTA5 and Apex on medium-high settings. I don't think these two games would have that much more workload would they?

Well that honestly exceeded my expectations of what I thought it could run. Just realize that you'll be at 720p all low settings for a lot of these games and right around 30 fps. That's not bad depending on the price of the machine and your expectations of what it can do.

Doom seems ok on the previous gen 2500u

And to compare to the 3500u...

Thanks for the test videos! But did they really have to show us Geralt's ass and the wagon scene from skyrim to get the point across?
If you don't mind me asking, how much did this new machine cost?
Most of the games you'll be running with that is going to be at low at 720p.

Best thing to do is try to get one of those thunderbolt GPU boxes, it probably won't be very portable, but it will somewhat impove gaming when you're not moving around.

or if you want to save money, down the road get a Laptop with a dedicated GPU and not some eGPU.
