Can a power outage damage a desktop?
As title. Had a power cut earlier tonight and I am concerned about any possible damage. I still do not know the reason for the outage other than everything in the local area including the street lights went out. power fluctuated on and off twice before remaining on. power company were not aware of it at the time, but there has been reports of high voltage power surges in nearby towns.

I currently do not have a UPS and only have a power strip with a surge protector in it as protection.

Also heard that a drive's filesystem can be damaged? These are the crystaldiskmark results for my 3 drives:

I think newer computers won't suffer any damage from power outages.
Power surges are a different story.
Lost a computer because of a lighting some time ago, sucked.

Power outage alone usually won't damage the hardware. However if you live in an area known to have frequent electricity stability issues, a UPS will certainly help minimizing the risks.

power spikes (lightning) can go through an ups and harm eqipment, but power outage or brown out will not damage a pc
