Gtx 1080 SLI suddenly show low fps
Hi, I have a gtx 1080 SLI Laptop and recently the fps in games have started to drop. Before this I played far cry 5, doom, witcher 3 (these games officially support sli) with the latest nvidia drivers. I can get very stable 60 fps at 4k with SLI but now for some reason SLI stutters and I get 40-50fps. When I disabled SLI, I can get better and more stable peformance ! (But not 60fps) This has never happened to me before.

These are my specs:

MSI GT83VR Notebook

I7 6920HQ Quad core Processor
Gtx 1080 SLI
64GB Ram
1TB SSD (Games in ssd) 1TB HDD

This is what I have tried but still didnt fix the problem:

-Restarted PC
-Installed latest nvidia driver from geforfe experience
-Uninstalled latest driver and rolled back to previous versions from nvidia website
-Tried both from my laptop display and my external 4k display
-Checked power supply is working properly

It worked fine before I dont know what caused it, please tell me if you have any ideas. Much appreciated.

Latest Driver is 399.xx
Avoid those

Use DDU whenever you switch Drivers, and use its Safe Mode > Reboot option.

Stick to the latest 398.xx Driver
399 is buggy as heck.

Yes I have tried ddu to uninstall and intall the 398 drivers (the one with june release date).

Strangely, some games that do NOT officially support SLI seem to work well with SLI when I used custom SLI profiles I searched online (such as MH World), whereas games that have official SLI profile configs are working like ♥♥♥♥. Godammit nvidia

Thanks though, any other ideas?

Overall, unless you load up a certain game that is shouting "You need this minimum driver version to run our game" chances are you usually won't really need a GPU Driver Update.

If the game runs fine, chances are grabbing the latest Driver won't change much for you.

It's one thing when a driver reaches a point of adding new features, or has addressed bugs of previous one. But latest driver is NOT always the best for everyones hardware config, or their games.

Wow ok now idk whether to scream in anger or cry with joy. Turns out your previous suggestion was half correct. I reinstalled the drivers but rolled back to the 391 version (27 March) instead of 398, and now I can get a stable 60fps again.

I'll keep in mind to never update unnecessarily again. Man I really thought something was wrong with my laptop or gpu I pulled my hair trying to solve this.

THANKS SO MUCH

Yes that is fine also, as long as the roll-back works fine and the GPU performance is back to being stable, it should be good-to-go.

yeah a new GPU driver as side not does not improver overall performance. it just improve certain games mentioned in the changelog. As it adds only support for certain games all other gamer are not getting an improvement at all but a risk to run unstable.

And "game ready" drivers do not mean (at least not always) that you require that driver for said game fixed. Like needing 399.xx for BF5

Just as a helpful hint for anyone who wants to run sli on newer games but don't wanna risk getting their older games sli profile getting screwed, I suggest that you export and save your old nvidia sli profile of the games you know that have problems after updating in your pc. Then you can update the driver to the latest version and just replace the sli profiles of the games that you saved
