upgrading a pc from 4th gen to 8th
i have a pc which is a 4th gen computer with these hardware:

intel core i5 4440 3.1ghz turbo boost 3.3ghz.
Asus gtx 960 strix OC II 2GB GDDR5.
Kingston hyperx fury 8gb ddr3 1600mhz 1 stick.
Samsung 840 pro 256GB SSD (OS installed + few games)
1TB WD 7200RPM black hard drive.
Corsair Tx 650M 80+ gold certified PSU.
MSI B85m-P33 V2 (M-ATX) motherboard.
Raidmax - Seiran (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case.

going to change the cpu,ram,mobo

cpu will be changed to intel core i5 8500 3.0ghz turbo boost 4.1ghz.

ram 2x8 corsair vengence 2666mhz.

motherboard gigabyte b360m DSH3.

i dont know about the case but if my current has poor airflow then i can get the nzxt s340 elite.

i know my gpu is weak but i mainly play on 1080p high setting and will upgrade soon when the new series comes out or when a GTX 1080 price drops in my country then i will buy that my psu can handle it i think.

so is this upgrade an improvment for my PC?

Nothing wrong with 8700, it's well worth it.

I just personally would never bother with a locked CPU and a lower chipset motherboard.
If it's not Z370 then I wouldn't bother. To me it's a waste to upgrade if I don't go all the way.

You can use an 8700K on B360 Chipset; you just can't OC it.
8700K does have higher Base + Turbo clocks by default over an 8700

To be honest I'd just upgrade the CPU to either an i7 4770 or 4790.

Get a 8400. There's only 100mHz difference between the 2 and 8400 is cheaper.

It will be a nice upgrade.

The NZXT S340 Elite has pretty bad airflow.

I myself would recommend the AMD R5 2600/2600x over the current Intel i5 CPUs. They cost less and have SMT which makes them significantly faster in multi core workloads.

the 8500 is a more recent released processor so why you dont recommend it?

The 8500 and 8400 were released at the same time..

For the 8500 you pay $20+ move for a very minor performance boost.

It's not any more recent than the 8400. Both are the exact same age.
There is no reason to pay extra for just 100MHz higher clockspeed.

i was planning to get the 8600K with z370 but overclocking means nothing to me cus i never experienced it before.

Alternatively you could pay even slightly more and go for the i5 8600 (the non-K) and have actually decent performance jump.

Oh yes, and the 9th gen will be out in couple of months.

@ Nathan Steele

All you need is a CPU upgrade on your current platform.

i cant find any core i7 haswell cpus in any store and i have the money to buy an 8th gen i5 8400 or 8500 and i already have a gpu so it makes sense upgrading.

Try Ebay, you can get good deals for 4770's and 4790's.

You don't buy them as new from store, you buy them used.
Surely plenty of them around.

Also, Intel 9th gen is coming soon btw.

Possible 4 core 8 thread cpus to fit on that motherboard are:

i7 4770
i7 4771
i7 4790
Xeon E3 1230 V3
Xeon E3 1231 V3

Go hunt down and grab a 4770 or 4790, before you do, update your Motherboard to latest BIOS.

Also get yourself a decent CPU Cooler for it, and then look to upgrade to a GPU that can actually do well in Gaming.

Rest of your specs are all fine. Clean install of Win10 64bit couldn't hurt.

Is the proposed upgrade an improvement? Yes, but probably not a cost-effective one. Here is the tech explanation -

Cpus are rated by their single and multi thread speeds which are measured by benchmark tests.

i5-8400 2335 / 11712
i5-8600k 2520 / 12811
i7-4790k 2530 / 11182

So the 4th gen i7 is just as good as the 8th gen i5 - in theory. It isn't an exact science as memory speeds, design improvements and the way different games work can effect final framerate.

In order to see these cpus utilise their full performance, a top end video card is required e.g. gtx1080ti or gtx1080. Otherwise the gpu will limit the performance of the cpu and the pc's frames per second speed will be determined by the video card.

If the monitor is only 60Hz, then 60fps is all that it can display.

K cpus can be overclocked. But they are usually faster than the non-K version of the same cpu when running at stock speeds.

Three videos which discuss cpus. The first one recommends buying a 4xxx cpu instead of 8xxx.

Well, OP wont be doing any OC'ing on the current B85 Motherboard, that's for sure.

Overall OP would basically need to consider:
> Just getting a 4770 or 4790 and that will be a decent step up.
> OP's GPU is sorely lacking though overall.

If going new-gen then you'd need to upgrade this at minimum:
> Motherboard, such as Z370 to have good features and be able to OC a K-CPU
> Going with a CPU that would actually beat a 4770/4790 is a moderate respect; such as i5-8600 or better.
> You would also require DDR4 RAM; good bet here would be 2x 8GB @ 2666 or better.

If going with CPU such as 4770/4790 non-K (Retail Box) these come with a Cooler from Intel. If you manage to grab one of these decently lower priced, but used, you're most likely going to need to buy your own CPU Cooler. To which a CM-Hyper212-EVO would do fine since we won't be OC'ing on that B85 Motherboard.

If going 8th Gen series, again 8600K or better is your best bet there. Any new-gen K-model-CPU does not ship with any cooler and you'll be required to purchase one. For 8600K or better, something from Noctua or BeQuiet is a good bet; like Dark Rock 3 or better.

If you do go beyond that 4th Gen series platform, then you're going to need to install Windows 10 64bit if you wish to stick to using Windows OS.
