what else should I install on my ssd?
only have windows on it and feel like I should be doing something else with it.

on second thought, a better question is what do you all have on your ssd other than windows (assuming you have an hdd as well)?

Depends on the size, what you do and what drives you have aswell. I only use windows on my OS SSD and keep all other stuff incl. downlaods and eprsonal files on secondary drives. Does not only keep the OS drive clean and fast but also makes wipes easier as I dont have to backup anything.

If you have a 2TB large OS SSD as example and otherwise only HDD's then of course use the speed of the SSD for the commong games you play that actually profit from faster loading.

Everything in the way of installed Apps.
Apps are all going to be small enough to fit on the SSD and it helps them with regards to their overall snappiness, etc.

Now maybe if you have some larger apps; such as various benchmark type of apps, those can be rather large like 1GB or more per app in some cases, so sure maybe install those onto your Secondary storage drive, that should be fine. Game clients however are quite a bit more snappy when on your OS SSD, so I see no reason to install those elsewhere, especially since you can pick where all your Games from them end up getting installed to.

Now to avoid some un-wanted hits to your SSD, helps to go to Winkey+E (Win Explorer) and on the left you will see your User's main folder with it's sub-folders for said User; such as Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc... These you can change by right clicking them and going to the Location tab and then change where those files will really exist. Such as D:\MyUserName\Documents for example.

Pretty much every game you own on PC should be installed on an SSD to increase load times.

*decrease loadtimes

but not every game actually laod faster with a SSD. Good example is Hearts of Iron 3 or Mass Effect Andromeda which doesnt care for SSD or HDD. ME:A for example loads as fast from a fast HDD as a SSD as it already preloads next map befor you reach the laoding point.
Some games like CSGO, World of Tanks, Battlefield or Call of Duty doesnt care for a SSD either as you still have to wait for the game to start anyway. Then you might load 10 seconds faster but have to wait until the game start instead of 60 seconds then 70 seconds.

And msot importantly most ppl d not own enough SSD space to afford a SSD only setup. Even our enthusiast Monk doesnt have a SSD only setup. The ppl with more then 2TB SSD space here in the forum you can count on one hand.

Everything but the long term storage. A 256GB SSD for windows/programs and a 512GB SSD for games and 1TB/4TB HDD's for storage.

First thing is put all programs that start with windows on the SSD. THEN you can add other riff-raff.

Yes many older or lesser demanding games; like table-top 2d types or even say CSGO; wont really load or perform any better/smoother just because of being on an SSD; as long as Games of this sort are on a decent 7200rpm HDD that is not super slow; you should be fine. The biggest help to a PC, even a budget PC, is having the OS installed to an SSD, since this helps bring fluidity to everything on that PC, period. PC can never really be fluid like on SSD when compared to any mechanical drive; except maybe if compared to high end workstation HDDs in a RAID-0 array perhaps. Still, most SSDs, even cheap prices ones can easily outperform and prefetch/cache data much more smoothly overall.

If it is a demanding game, does alot of on the fly pre-fetching in-game (like say GTAV) or is a realtime MMO / Open World type of game (like say Total War types or latest TW: Warhammer for example) then yes these greatly benefit from being installed to an SSD type of drive.
