Where are games now stored in linux?
I've upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04 and want to move my games from my old HD. They were stored in .local/share/steam/steamapps/common. I see that there's a new .steam folder. Should I move the games into .steam/steam/games (which is presently empty)? Are there any other hidden files that have to be moved or modified to have the new version of steam find all the required files?

The stuff in ~/.steam are just links to directories in ~/.local/share/steam. Where they're stored by default hasn't changed.

They are still stored in the same location. That games folder is used for icons.

Please forgive me if this is a dumb question as I am not familiar with the Linux version of Steam, but sn't there a way to access the game files locally using the "Local Files" tab in your Steam game's properties window?

Yes but OP currently does not have any games installed.

Tip: You can keep your games in your old disk and add that location as a new library on steam.

Thanks. Since I haven't installed a game on this installation of steam yet, it hasn't created the .local directories. I'll try starting an installation, pausing it, then moving the files. Hopefully that will cancel further downloading. Might need to 'verify local files' or whatever.

Spoopy Kitteh, yes there is a 'simple' way to move games now, but only from an existing installation, nor from a new one.

You don't need to start an installation. Just copy all the games to your steam library folder with steam not running. Once you finish the copy, start steam and it should detect all your games.

You can check the location where you have to copy your games by checking your local steam library folders (Steam->Settings->Downloads->"STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS")

It still wants to download the game. I put the files in .steam/steamapps/common, thinking that was similar to the old way . The settings says that it downloads to .steam/steam So, is each game supposed to be in a folder in .steam/steam?

Could someone with steam on Ubuntu 18.04 please tell me which folder their games are actually stored in?

Steam/steam/games/ only has icons in it..

Games are stored in Steam/appdata/common/ and the appmanifest files are stored in appdata. If you didn't copy over the appmanifest files you have to "download" the games again, it will detect the files are already there, check the file integrity and create a new appmanifest file.

^ This

"Games" is just icon files for when using different View option in Steam Client > Library

The actual games by default would be:
\Steam\Steamapps\Common
-or-
\SteamLibrary\Steamapps\Common (for secondary drive based Steam Library created folders)

/home/$USER/.steam/steam

As I said, you can check your current lib folder on Steam->Settings->Downloads->"STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS"

Also, on .steam/steam are not directly located your games, you have user settings files, logs, etc. But the easiest way to move all your data from your old disk is by just copy everything all the contents of the old installation (simply find the dir with the same/similar directory structure and copy everything).

The proper location seems to be .steam/steamapps/common. To recognize the folder, the appmanifest_xxx.acf file has to be transferred as well. It still wouldn't run, giving a 'missing executable error for hl2.sh. steam pointed me to their 'how to fix download errors' page. Following those instructions deleted most of the folder, starting a fresh download.

I think I'll try to figure out how to boot from the old HD and transfer the files the new way.

Whether it be Linux or Windows OS'
to overcome the fact that the "AppMainfest" is indeed missing (telling Steam where the game or app resides so it can in-turn launch it) is easily overcome to restoring Steam games/apps to the location they be looked for by Steam; i.e. \Steamapps\Common\GameName
Doing so without Steam running at all, then launching Steam, clicking the game/app where the AppManifest is indeed now missing, then clicking "Install" to which you'd choose the same drive and/or Steam Library folder location where those files now exist; in-turn Steam will see these files, verify them, then create the proper AppMainfest, finalizing the "Install" process; turning the "Install" option into the "Play" option.

I booted from the old HD, followed the instructions to move the game. It did move the whole folder. Steam still say 'install' rather than 'play'. The appmanifest file was moved appropriately.

I clicked on install, and it insisted on starting to download the whole thing. Not sure what to try next. I'm on limited downloads, so downloading it without extra internet fees would take 3 or 4 months. I have all the files already. I just need steam to recognize them, which is isn't.

the manifest files needed are within \Steam\DepotCache though.
