can i duct tape the entire bottom of a motherboard?
just regular black duct tape (not electrical tape) i was wondering if duct tape was conductive

as for why? simple i dont use a case and i kinda just want to kinda shield the motherboard from debris and damage when i put it on a table

i move it alot in my backpack from home to family/work and usualy carry my psu/gpu with me in said backpack separated with carboard

this is not my main pc its just some spare part that i carry with me because it is much less a hassle to move around and a labtop is a big nono since i dont want to spend money (plus what i carry is way more powerfull than most gaming labtop)

Find some old, right sized briefcase and DIY a case out of it.
And all your problems have been resolved safely and with style.

Im no expert but im pretty sure thats a big no no.
i have done it with one of my HDD (taped the entire pcb) cuz i didnt care about it dying and it worked so far, but i had doubt doing it with a motherboard that got more voltage (also more expensive than a HDD)

Maybe a conformal coating spray?

But that is a cased hdd, a motherboard doesnt have the same protection. Do you really want to get sticky crap all over the back of your board?
I do not care if i do it its going to be permanent

plastidip it. It's not conductive, will protect it, and peel off when you don't want it anymore. Pick it up at any auto-parts store/walmart.

That's a huge no. There are a lot of very important pins on the bottom, and they're very easy to bend.

My bad. I thought you meant the *bottom* edge. I wouldn't bother covering the backside, it should be fine left bare - I doubt you'll seriously damage or break anything.

Just buy a £20 case and avoid the issue entirely.

Personally I'd find an old case, my own, friends, scrapyard or a computer repair shop. Doesn't matter if its an ancient case designed with PSU location at the top just make sure it'd fit the motherboard. Cut the motherbaord plate out of the case, smooth the cuts. Maybe even add some foam/felt or something to protect you desk.

Attach the motherboard to the now bare motherboard plate. Motherboard can then be moved easily with no fix of damaging solder or anything else on the bottom.

Hi OP.

Interesting question.

What about using motherboard standoffs screwed into the mobo?

That way you have some clearance from debris etc but still maintain integrity of the board without tape or other foreign objects.

Maybe a solution?

I would use a simple cardboard sheet matching the mobo attached with something at the edges. That is good-enough protection from accidental touch and dust, while no problems with electricity.

However it is still suspect to heat problems -- hard to estimate whether real or imagined. Outside the case there is probably enough heat elimination naturally. If there are some hor elements on the down side you can still cut holes there.

You can also add some spreader to have a consistent air gap.
