Gaming on the go (streaming)
So I want to play games from my desktop when I am away grom home. It seems my best option for that is buying an nvidia shield and using gamestream.

Can anyone tell me what is the internet speed requirement and how much bandwidth is used in doing so for both my home connection and wherever I connect abroad.

Steam Link for android:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4415-USKX-8715
- IOS version is on the way as well.

Moonlight for Android IOS and the Chrome browser:
https://moonlight-stream.com/
- Only works with an Nvidia powered streaming machine.

You will need a faster and preferably wired or 5Ghz Wifi connection for Streaming. So don't expect to be able to do this on your mobile data or the MC Donalds Wifi..

What would steam link app on android do? I'm not going to play on my phone if I'm at home.

What speeds do I need through the internet for this to work?

remote steam link streaming requires alot of speed and low ping isp
50+Mb upload

most isps in the us cap around 5-10mb up

Wow, I work for an ISP and the highed I can get is 10. Well I guess that slashes my dream, is it possible to havr lower for a lower resolution/frame rate?

you can test inhome with 2 pcs, use same steam acct, enable streamong on host
set the bandwidth limit on client to 5-10mb and see how it looks
non moving images uses under that, but full screen motion takes alot more

I tried with 10Mb before and i couldnt do it. Now i got 100/50 fiber and it flies.

Any idea how much bandwidth it uses?

A lot. It's designed to be used in a local area network, not over the internet.

not really alot, for lan, but over the typical inetnet upload speed
most have gigabit lan with n/ac routers capable of 100+mb traffic

but host upload speed is usually 30-40mb when streaming, menus or non moving display may drop to 5mb
5.1 sound adds a little, but not much
returning controls is almost nothing

I have an Nvidia shield and shield tablet and have used gamestream on both. I upgraded from 2.4ghz 24mbps with my isp to 75mb speed a couple years ago because it would pixelate from the video compression more than anything. The frame rate stayed at >=30 with the 24mbps connection, but like I said would have video compression artifacts/pixelation pretty frequently. The latency and Ping was on the higher side too with the 2.4ghz 24mbps connection. The 5ghz band really did more than the speed itself I think. the latency, ping and therefore video compression and lag went down significantly.

It really will come down to the connection you'll have elsewhere. A 5ghz band is not standard for hotels and most rental places I have found yet and that will most likely count you out of the ability. At your house I would say >30mbps even with 2.4 band will be okay to run 30fps/720p-1080p at least, but >50mbps with 5ghz band will give you optimum results and run 1080/60fps.

fyi I also tried a pair Powerline adapters and also ran a ~25ft ethernet direct connection from pc to nvidia shield when testing and the 5ghz wireless band did better over that distance then the hardwired options

If you got a phone which let you hook up to HDMI screens using the USB port then you could use a blue tooth controller and wifi.

I should clarify a little about myself here. I don't have wireless and never will. My house has 24 home run cat6 drops and I do have a steam link. At home I would never use any wireless device.

My sole goal is to try and get gaming going when I'm away. So the max inet upload I can get in my area is 10mbps so sounds like that's a bust. In case I ever get better options I'm still curious how much bandwidth is used. 50mb /hr? 1gb/hr??

Maybe H.265 with good encoding can work as good as the 50 mbps H.264 for Steam Link?Twitch recommend 6-7 mbps for 1080p 60 fps but that's not either HEVC right? May need a better PC / card for it but like GTX 10 series support that encoding right?
