How is this possible when said device, my Samsung 960 EVO M.2 IS actually installed as I am currently typing from this system as it's my windows drive.
I have reseated the M.2 with no luck.

It's in device manager. It pertains to my Samsung 960 EVO which is connected as I am using this from that drive. Also, AHCI in device manager claims the same error;

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.

Most likely because you don't have the Drivers installed.

It's an MSI Z270 A Pro. Drivers were installed upon windows install.
Recently tried to reinstall the NVMe express drivers & no luck. It tells me the device is not connected as well.

960 EVO is an NVMe drive, that means you need to enable that in the BIOS.
In-return, 2x SATA Ports will get disabled. So ensure you do not attempt to use the disable ports at the same time as an NVMe drive.

Uninstall all entries from Intel and/or Samsung
via Control Panel > Programs and Features
Reboot as needed after each until all are removed.


I will list the latest Drivers you need, install in the listed order:

Before doing anything regarding this further, update the motherboard to the latest bios.
As newer drivers might not function as intended if the bios is outdated.

Every Z270 Motherbaord has NVMe support.

However Samsung 960 SSD's have an own driver that can be downlaoded from Samsung or through Samsung Magician.

Yep, I have the EVO installed to the M.2 slot using Samsung's own driver.

Could you install and run Piriform SPECCY
Then after it finishes loading your specs summary
click on File > Publish > copy to clipboard and then paste that link in here.

It will share your hardware device names, driver versions, os version, background services.
This way can get a look at how things look in your Device Manager.

But again, in your BIOS, for your M2 device you should have a choice for speed purposes; SATA vs PCIE (or NVMe) you sure it's on the correct mode?

Have tried the bios setting for ahci mode, even disabled the raid/optane & windows will not boot. Only boots with the optane.

As for sata or pcie/NVMe, I don't see such a setting. Just raid/optane or ahci.

If the OS only boots correctly when the M2 is configured as Optane, then it doesn't sound like the OS is installed to the M2 SSD, or you are using more than one M2 SSD. Cause you can't boot off of Optane configured SSD, that gets used as RAM/Cache.
