Nvidia Geforce Experience Not Working FIXED
Nvidia Geforce Experience Not Working: Something went wrong, try restarting Geforce Experience FIXED

So Firstly, I have Windows 7 SP1 and a GTX 1060 SF

Over the past couple of months, I have noticed that Geforce Experience hasn't been working properly, and that I'm not the only one to have this problem. Everyone is opening the program all to be met with the same very vague error message:

Something went wrong, try restarting Geforce Experience

As for a Fix to this problem, I have seen nothing online that properly fixed the problem, just more vague "Did you try turning it off and back on again?" fixes, so I thought I would share what I did that fixed the problem for me.

  1. Press Windows Key+R - A window should appear
  2. Type Services.msc and hit Enter - A window titled Services should have appeared
  3. Scroll down until you find the service titled Nvidia Telemetry Container
Notice that the startup type is set to automatic, yet it doesn't say that the program has Started. At this point, if you try to start it manually, it will show an error mesage saying Access Denied
  4. Right click said service and click Properties
  5. Go to the Log On tab and switch from This Account to Local System Account

Make sure you Apply your changes and hit OK. Now all you have to do is Restart your PC and when it starts up again, you should be able to open Geforce Experience with no issue!

I hope this guide has helped you and saved you from further frustration. Now go update those drivers!

Or even better, just update your drivers manually and don't install GeForce Experience at all...
True, this is a very viable option for some, but Geforce Experince gives me, and I'm sure many others, a great deal of convenience in updating my drivers as soon as they come out, so when a program such as this stops working, drivers fall out of date very quickly and a certain fix is necessary to keep everything working 100%

I've seen more accounts of GFExp causing a problem with its quick update method than a manual clean install. Just saying.

Thanks for that fix it worked perfectly as I am still running Win7 Ult SP1.
All the other so called fixes, that I came across, only fix a part of the problem.
This is exactly what has been happening to me! Yes, I have had to resort to the OP's solution. But I don't get why this became a problem. Originally the GeForce Experience program worked just fine without having to do this. The very first time this happened, I removed and reinstalled the program, but this little quirk did not change.

So yes, I'm glad I can run that silly telemetry service when logged in as myself, but why can't it run as the "Network Service" user like the other services this program depends on, like NVIDIA NetworkService Container?

I'm noticing that some other NVIDIA services also run under a Local System account, so maybe it was something I accidentally changed?

the other thing is, I've had to do this everytime there's an update as well. im not sure why this is such a prevelant problem, and why it hasnt been fixed for how long this has been going on.

DDU is your friend
use it

If you are only using GFE merely to update drivers whats the point of installing it when you could update the driver yourself and avoid this possible hassle?

Most likely an issue with your system more so a problem with GFE
But regardless, GFE is just a waste that comes with its own problems and is easily dealt with by NOT installing it.

I've already commented this before, but GFE is extremely convenient in that it notifies me when a new driver is released so I can download it right away. Sure, I could manually uninstall and install the new drivers, but it's a manner of also manually checking frequently. I much prefer the program that does it for me whenever I turn my pc on, and I know there are plenty others like me out there who are having this issue and are just looking for a fix.

While thats partially true
You dont HAVE to install every updated driver that gets released

If the driver specifically helps with performance thats one thing, but a driver helping you is on a case by case basis

And the fact that NVIDIA releases 1 or 2 drivers on a good Month gives you a certain time frame for you to manually check for said driver.

If the issue is SYSTEM specific the only way to fix it is by either using DDU or simply not installing GFE. And with you being on Win7, they probably wont be paying much attention to that OS anymore with its Support deadline ending next year.

With that said
id say its probably an issue on the end of Win7 (especially since you arent even on the latest SP) rather than GFE itself (Regardless of how much i think GFE sucks).

Comes down to the more you have running in the background the more potential conflicts can arise.

You’re more likely to run into issues installing every update that isn’t necessary than sticking with a version that is stable for you. It’s a fallacy that you should always keep all drivers updated.

Valid point but the fact is you don't need every new driver the moment it comes out. The only reasons to upgrade to the newest drivers are

1. It's tailored for newly released game/s. If you don't own the game/s it's worthless.
2. Bug Fixes.. If you don't have the bug then it has nothing to fix.
3. implement a new feature you want to try and will use.

Until the a few days ago I'd been using 398.82-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql since August last year. I only installed the latest to see how well my display would perform using Nvidia's G-sync compatible feature. If it wasn't for that I'd still be using a driver almost 5 months old.

If it's not broke don't fix it. With every new driver comes the possiblity for a new bug. It may only afftect a select few or it may affect a large number. When that happens they either push out a fix or recommend users install a previous driver version till they fix it.
