Getting GTX 1080 ti with my i7-3770k
So my gtx 1070 went faulty within warranty. The shop gave me credit so getting a gtx 1080 ti while still available. I am not interested in the RTX cards.

So Specs are/will be soon: i7-3770k @ 4.4 Ghz 32GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
GTX 1080 ti with Z35 2560 x 1080p Gsync 200 Hz monitor.

I am a little concerned about the CPU being a little too weak for the GPU.
All games are different. Are there any specific gaming benchmarks with a similar setup comparing to more modern CPUs?

The new intel CPUs are out soon but I am not sure there will be a noticable performance boost for the money.
Not too many games it seems benefit from the extra cores.

Even OC'd your CPU will bottleneck that GPU. How much will depend on the game as some are more CPU heavy that others.

Could upgradde your CPU, motherboard and Ram or your monitor. Running games at higher Resolution will require more GPU power with less CPU requirement. Still have some bottleneck due to your CPU but you'd still have close to the same as you would on a lower res.

You'll be cutting it close but I think your games will run alright. That is one serious monitor, but being 1080p you'll need to turn down certain graphic settings in-game that are demanding on the CPU since it will be a bottleneck.

I suggest you go through with a GTX 1080 Ti but also get a very powerful 280mm (or 240mm depending on your case) AIO CPU cooler like a "NZXT Kraken X62 Rev 2", "Corsair H110i", or "EVGA CLC 280" to overclock your CPU to it's absolute limit to increase the ceiling of your CPU bottleneck.

Plus even when you upgrade your motherboard, CPU, and RAM later you can still use that cooler for whatever you upgrade to down the road.

I would Say a Ryzen 5 1600 with a 1070/ti but you already have he processer so get the 1080 ti and upgrade to a Ryzen 5/7
Unless his build is mainly for video rendering and virtual machines he's better off getting an i7-8700K while its on sale with an Z370 motherboard once he plans to upgrade.

The i7-8700K has 22% higher single-core and quad-core processing over a Ryzen 7 2700X which gives it an edge in gaming and 'normal' applications. Not to mention much easier to overclock to 5.0GHz. I suppose it comes down to which one is cheaper currently and if gaming is a high priority.

At the time a few months back I got the 8700K new on sale for $420CAD after tax while the 2700X was $475CAD after tax.

There is a intel shortage till mid 2019 so and will be cheaper right now and in the near future
Ahhhh damn yea got me there! Lol

Others reported to run it okay with 2nd gen cpu, so don't worry ahead.

This youtuber only shows the 1080p benchmarks with the graphics always set to Very Low. Of course there won't be a large bottleneck. And the one on Very High is on a 1440p display so it would be more taxing on the GPU. Very unrealistic benchmarks, you would see a larger gap with CPU bottleneck at 1080p if you had the graphic settings set to High.

Settings are set to low at 1080p to put stress on the cpu to reveal the maximum number of frames the cpu can process... The higher the settings or resolution or even both put more strain on the gpu... Anyways I have personal experience running an x5675 @ 4.6ghz and a gtx 1080 at both 1080p and 1440p with very good results.

I read you comments and thought about it. Now I have the GPU, the CPU is running harder & hotter. A further overclock is not wise. Possibly a better & inexpensive air cooler for now. The i7-3770k has intel crappy thermal paste inside. Not interested in delidding.

Similar thing happened to me. I bought a cheap air cooler with a big fan, it works fine.

DEEPCOOL GAMMAXX 300 (there is one on ebay now for AUD $25 plus postage)
