I5 3570k vs i7 2700k
I'm thinking about making a budget build for 1440p gaming and I see these CPU's going for cheap on ebay all the time. Which should I get if I overclock to 5ghz? My cooler would be a Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2 AIO Liquid cooler and I might get a GTX 1080 or the RTX 2070 when it drops

Those CPUs are not good enough for modern high end GPUs
Aim for 4790K or newer.

2700k is fine for today's high end gpu's when overclocked to around 4.6ghz or higher... Hell even an x5675 @ 4.5ghz on the x58 platform is enough for a 1080 ti and I have personal experience with one paired with a 1080😉

Get the 2700k.

No they are not; all of that is below FX-8350, which is not enough to utilize GTX 1080 or RTX

4770K or 4790K is basically the minimum you'd want, anything less won't be good for modern games, or GPUs

I have an i7-2600 @ 4.3 and 1080ti. Works fine at 1080p, even at 4k DSR w/o issues.

I wouldn't buy an i5. And if I was spending money I buy something that is current tech. Saving a few bucks on a cpu if you still need to buy mobo, memory, gpu, psu isn't a great idea in my opinion.

The biggest issue though is you'll be buying stuff that no longer has support, no Motherboard warranty, etc. And many motherboards that old also don't have bios updates to patch all the Intel issues.

It's ok if you already have it, its silly if you buy it now

As it seems you want value for money then consider modern AMD processors also. a 7 year old intel CPU will not be great for gaming much longer. I have an overclocked i7-3770k - still good but will not be expecting it to hold up too much longer.
