New Motherboard Upgrade, (LGA 1150 / i7 4790K compatible)
So, im due for a bit of an upgrade motherboard wise, however, I'm not sure what I should go with.
I'm leaning towards the Asus Z97 or the Gigabyte Z97X motherboards. I intend on bringing over my 980 and SLI'ing it in the future. Any suggestions?

i just suggest never using SLI, there's little support and for the price of an SLI setup you can just get a more powerful card that will reliably give you more support

I've heard it go both ways, and with an SLI ready 980, I would rather hold onto that and get a second card than straight upgrade, especially considering that price will play a factor in this whole ordeal.

There's little point to upgrading to an old motherboard/socket. What exactly is wrong with your motherboard that makes you want to upgrade?

Besides the fact that it is quite old and beaten, some of the pins in the CPU are heat damaged, so its not working to its full and potentially damaging my I7

I also don't Think SLI is a great idea, especially for newer games, not only due to the sli scaling, but also because the 980 only got 4gb VRAM. However if you can get it for very cheap, it could be a decent deal.

When it works, the performance boost is marvelous. But when it doesn't, it can be a headache to jump through all the hoops to fix whatever is wrong. As long as you don't mind going the extra mile into technical troubleshooting from time to time, SLI is still a viable option.

So its not doomsday if something goes wrong with SLI, just a bit of a pain to work with then, huh?

Or just turn off SLI mode. :steammocking:

LGA 1150 motherboards are quite expensive. You might as well upgrade to newer platform in your case.

Buy a i5 8600K, Z370 motherboard, DDR4 RAM and sell the 4790K and your DDR3 RAM.

You would get increased single core performance and especially increased multi-core performance.

What's your current board?

I'm not sure which one it is, since I lost the manual and it isn't printed on the board, but I think its an Asus H87 ME?

It should always be printed in the board. It could be hidden behind the gpu.

So, it is an Asus H87 M-E. Found the manual.

Possibly. I'll need to double check a few things first, but I'm interested.
