Your CPU is the main issue here. Replacing the CPU means you will also have to buy a new motherboard and DDR4 RAM.
All motherboard which fit your CPU will have the same ports on them, don't expect to find a mobo with USB 3.0 for example.
It's not worth it spending tons of money on this 7 year old machine. If you have any issues with it replace it.
Which motherboard do you have anyway?
But it's sometimes cheaper to buy a whole PC, an old HP office PC for example then it is to buy only a motherboard.
or should I just go looking on amazon for and LGA1155 motherboard thats relitivly cheap?
5-10$ out of the cpu.
In terms of selling them.
If it works, sure, why not. I mean, the platform is so old that using any money on it isn't worth it anyway.
the whole story is, I have two PC's. one is an old optiplex 790 with JUST the i5 in it and i'm trying to put the i5 in my main PC with the G1 GTX 970 but i wanna see if i can put the old motherboard in too.
very true. thanks man i apreciate it!
That + the fact that good LGA1155 motherboards are expensive. Some you have to pay nearly 100$ for.
At that price point, you might as well sell everything you have (except gpu) and buy completely new platform.
