Will a 60GB SSD be enough for windows 10
So I have got myself another computer for most work - an old one dual core - gt 710 gpu - ubuntu linux. It is surprisingly good for all my non gaming applications - and cheap.
Of course there are much less of the update & privacy headaches of windows 10.

I am presently using windows 7 professional machine for gaming - i7-3770k - gtx 1070 & 32 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz - to be for use by windows 10. The present 120GB boot drive will be going into the other linux machine.

Support for windows 7 will be ending in the non too distant future to will eventually need to stop using it.

I am swapping drives around and would like to have it for a GAMING ONLY machine.

So I hope 60GB is enough for a boot SSD.
I will likely install the free windows 10. I see no reason to pay for windows 10 it for an exclusivly gaming machine.

So I will still need to install some things on it such as:

MSi afterburner & gaming App
Antivirus
Firewall
Drivers & software for components.
Teamspeak

Also primocache & Process Lasso to speed things up a bit.

& Not much else.

All games will be installed on a hard drive with another couple of 60 SSDs in raid 0 for caching - using primocache.

I can turn off the hibernation saving space and possibly the pagefile.

So will it fit on a 60GB ssd?
I hope to know before installing everything to find out no and have to do it all again.
I am keen to do this WITHOUT spending any more money.

Also just thought of moving the user folder to the hard drive.

Any other suggestions appreciated.

You can also change location for document, videos, music and picture folders. Just right click the folders and under one of the tabs will be the location. Change it. I just changed mine to e:\Documents instead of c:\Documents. Same for the others.

You have enough space for the OS, but you'll need to redirect virtually everything else. A healthy Win10 install is about 30GB. Since SDDs rarely give the full advertised storage space, you should have 10-20GB left over, just enough for a couple of files and your core apps.

Quickest way is to open Explorer and rightclick the folder under the Quick Access list to the left. 5 in total. Missed Downloads.
After properties the tab is called 'Locations'
Just change the location manually and select Apply.
If you already have items in the current location select Move before pressing Apply.
All items in X location will be moved to the new destination so everythings all in same location..

Yes, 60gb is enough for just Windows and the basic programs.

you could go up to 128 for a little more headroom.

Yes but for 10 bucks more you can buy a 120 GB SSD, enough for W10, programs and one AAA Steam game.
For example The Crew 2.

10 bucks more than what? I already have the SSD hardware. I have a 2TB hard drive for all games. there are two other 60 GB in raid 0 to cache it.

You should have bought 120GB SSD at very least.
240 GB is the sweat spot now.
Anyway just for OS and few programs should be enough.
But you can't play on a SSD and this could be annoying in some games.
That's why I recommend to have at least space for 1 game so you could transfer files from slow and ancient HDD to SSD.

120 GB SSD purchased about a year ago - now going in the linux machine

3 x 60 GB SSDs purchased between 2012 and 2014.

Only recent purchase related purchases related to this post was the old cheap computer and the fantastic gt 710 gpu to go with it - neither of which will be used for games.

It seems you do not understand the concept of caching.

60GB MIGHT be enough for absolute minimum, 120GB is better while 240/250GB is really the best starting point as already mentioned.

There are 2 main problems with using a 60GB drive
1: The amount of space needed for future Windows Updates, Restore points will have to be either limited or fully disabled to save space

2: The pagefile

Fully disabling the pagefile can be iffy, sure it'll run fine without it with an adequate amount of RAM, but there are games that do require it to run and some that will have degraded performance without it

The pagefile portion can be fixed by simply placing it on a different drive with adequate space
-

As far as not wanting to spend money goes, 120/240/250GB SSDs are very cheap these days, so you may want to consider the better safe than sorry way of thinking.

So you have three 60GB SSD's ?

wouldn;t it make more sense to use one as a cache drive for the 2TB mechanical and use two SSD's in Raid 0 for OS.

It would be great if you could read the inital post. I did state that.

1. I did.

2. You did state what exactly ?, there is no mention of using two drives in raid for OS and no explicit mention of having 3x 60GB SSD's, I garnered this from further posts, not the OP. In the OP you asking if Win 10 will fit on a 60GB drive and you futher state "another couple of 60 SSDs in raid 0 for caching", thus the assumption was made you have 3x 60GB SSD's.

3. I think you misread my post, in the OP you ask if 60GB was enough for windows because you want to use two other 60SSD's for a cache drive for your 2TB mechanical, I stated wouldn't it make more sense to use two 60GB's in raid for OS and a single SSD for the mechanical drive cache.
