Stop screen dimming in fullscreen videos
If I'm watching a video in fullscreen, it can be on youtube, vlc, whatever, the screen will automatically dim after a few seconds.

Windows 10, R9 380, i5 6500

Is there a fix for this?

Not originally in this thread, but wanted to mention I just ran into this same issue. I found this thread when searching for a solution. Disabling my connected third screen, an HDR enabled TV, fixed this too. I do use an NVidia card (GEFORCE RTX 2070), but recently updated Windows. I have been holding off on my GPU update. I think whatever this is is related to the Windows update.

Good luck and game on. Hopefully it's no more than a minor annoyance for most.

OK, figured out how to fix it in my case. Yesterday I moved my television.

My TV supports HDR but my other two monitors do not. I normally have my TV disabled, because it only gets situational use, however unplugging and plugging it back in when I moved it reactivated it.

So to fix this issue, go into Display Settings, either disable the HDR monitor OR switch the switch that says to use HDR for fullscreen applications off.

I suspect Chris (above) is right with this being an Nvidia driver issue.

This fixed it for me as well. I just got a new monitor with HDR, my other old monitor doesn't support it.
Right click > Display settings > Select your HDR monitor > Turn off HRD games and Apps.

Real crappy fix, since the point of getting an HDR monitor is so you can play in HDR. But im not watching grayed out movies.

Just wanted to say thanks! Been driving me crazy and this fixed the issue for me.
Probably long been Resolved but I just found the solution for me. The monitor dims when it is trying to refresh itself higher than what it was designed for. check your refresh rate on the selected resolution. My T.V has a refresh rate of 60 Hz. My resolution was 1920x1080 (120). So every time I tried to go full screen the picture came out super dim. I selected 1920x1080 (50) and BAM brighter than ever. Think of your monitor / t.v. as a shutter on a camera. The faster the shutter, the less light gets through and darker the image. Same rule applies to our monitors.

You just have an odd TV. This wouldn't happen with Monitors.
get a 1080p monitor

I have the same issue. I haven't updated my Nvidia driver in over a month. However Windows updated a few days ago, so I think there must be some Windows update that has caused this.

Thanks, man! This definitely solves my problem too - LG Ultrawide 29'' + Radeon Drivers updated. My TV supports HDR and that's what's causing the BUG.

Found this issue to be with the latest Radeon Software. My profile was set to "Gaming". After switching to "Standard", I no longer had this issue. I did not have to disable HDR.
I just bought a new monitor and installed it this week. I've been experimenting with the settings and stuff. I have HDR turned on through Windows, and also have Freesync on [even though I use NVidia.] I was watching a Youtube Video today. Beegees: Staying Alive. Don't ask me why. I was feeling groovy.

Anyway, I noticed the screen would dim in fullscreen after the onscreen controls disappeared. Couldn't figure it out. Found this thread and someone mentioned about a browser. I was watching through Chrome, but switched over to Firefox to check it there. No dimming.

The problem is Chrome is using Hardware Acceleration.

>> Go to top right corner of Chrome Broswer--the three dots.
>> Select Settings
>> In the Search Settings box at the top of the screen search: Hardware Acceleration
>> You'll see an option that says, "Use Hardware Acceleration when available."
>> Turn if off
>> Relaunch
>> May need to just close Chrome and open it again.
>> Problem solved.

No, just turn the HDR crap off. That has no place being on when you're using a PC, period.
dude, I've had this same issue for years... anytime something is fullscreen in my second monitor it dims... have tried every damned thing imaginable.
omg after years and years I finally figured it out!!! my second monitor which is a TV repurposed had what i thought was a weird 1080P resolution where I had to resize it in the nvidia control panel, I was running it at a custom resolution 1919 x 1079 (interlaced) with some custom settings to get windows to fit correctly on the screen. I decided to set it back to its native resolution and pulled out the ancient remote and played with the TV settings, OVERSCAN was turned on which was causing the problem that i was trying to fix with NVIDIA control panel... so if anyone stumbles upon this here maybe you are running a custom resolution in NVIDIA which is causing this bug or not running your monitor/tv in its native resolution. GOOD LUCK, this have annoyed me for forever and day, and I have googled endlessly to find "power options" that might be causing this problem lol

Thank you! This sort of explains why my HP laptop built-in screen (60Hz) dims down when watching full screen a 50 fps video from YouTube. This does not happen for 60 fps videos.
while this is an old thread that for some reason was necro-ed....

dimming is a tv related function and can be turned off easily in the tv settings, its basically an energy saver feature.... should be in the backlight settings, under ECO sensor (assuming it hasnt been moved or renamed on newer tv models).

it has nothing to do with resolution or anything.

It has much to do with HDR settings, energy saver doesnt turn on after starting video straight away dooh :D
Set Laptop to Ultra/High Performance or AMD Ryzen High Performance profile in Windows OS. Edit the profile and disable all settings regarding Screen Dimming when running off Wall Power. Then just set a Display Turn-Off Timer instead; so that if the system is idle and you walk away from it that after that idle period passes (lets say 15 mins) that it just turns the screen off.

Yes dimming is very annoying and really I only see the need to use that when running on battery power. And most 60Hz based Laptops don't have any form of HDR, so I doubt that's a factor. This is usually only a feature on premium 120Hz or higher screens with regards to Laptops.
