what CPU is right for my motherboard

all right steam users I'm looking for a new CPU for my motherboard two CPU got my interest
AMD FX 8350 4GHz 8MB L2 and Intel Quad Core i5 4460 3.2GHz (4th Generation) however I don't know if they are compatible with the motherboard still a noob

my motherboard is Dell Inc. 088DT1
the full-size desktop year 2013

the current CPU is Intel Core i3 4150 @ 3.50GHz Haswell 22nm Technology

ram two sticks 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)

Operating System Windows 8.1 64-bit

graphics card 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 (Gigabyte)

would the CPUs be compatible with my pc

The FX will not work, Amd are never compatible with intel sockets.

The 4460 should work.

back in the socket7 and earlier days amd and intel used the same sockets
but that was over 20 years ago

its a socket 1150 cpu
any 4th gen i5/i7 will work (4xxx)

Intel and AMD sockets aren't compatible, as you read above me. I'd buy a i5 instead.

fx 8350 is not only a downgrade but it's not compatible as mentioned above.. Look for a 4770k i7 if you're board supports it power wise .. as mentioned below dont bother if u plan to keep the 1030 in service.

Make the upgrade worthwhile and get the i7 4xxx.


However if you're going to keep using the GT 1030 then don't bother with any replacement cpu.

GT 1030 would run well even with your current CPU.
low end GPUs require low end CPUs.

For newer games and programs from time to time I capture video game footage ever since I installed the the 1030 GT the video has been degraded, washed up and blurry. I've Been Told my current CPU isn't powerful enough for the GT

you will need a bigger power supply for a graphics card and cpu upgrade. but should be able to just upgrade the cpu with that power supply. i just looked up your motherboard and it does support 4th generation i7 but theres no point in getting an unlocked cpu because your motherboard doesnt support cpu overclocking so the very best cpu upgrade your computer can take is an i7 4770. if i were you tho i would look at building a more modern computer instead of throwing money at the one you have. but if thats not possible due to money limitations and you want to upgrade the cpu then the i7 4770 is the best you can do

Personally I'd advice against pre-built if you can build your own. Pre-builts, in my experience, always come with a trash component I end up replacing in the end. Like a super slow drive, or maybe sub optimal RAM. If you can go the DIY way, do so. My humble opinion, though.

So, yeah, slap in a good 4th gen i7 if your mobo supports it. You will also need a bit more power. Preferably a good quality PSU at 400w, maybe 450.

As for the 1030... How does that card perform? I was surprised the other day by an old GTX 730 when I loaded a few old simple games on it and they ran pretty nicely.

The gt 1030 performs pretty well at least to me I can play cod waw and cod 4 on the higher settings
