a lot of people think that when a motherboard supports dual-channel it can only support 2 RAM stick overall
but motherboards can come with two dual-channels (which is why they have 4 slots), it can have 2 memory sticks in one dual-channel and 2 memory sticks in the other dual-channel
there is no difference really in games if you use 2x8 or 4x4
the only positive i see for gaming is when you have 2x8 you have room to upgrade when you need it
a lot of laptops i have come with only 1x8GB of SODIMM memory, leaving one slot for upgradability, if your laptop has this, then you can just find the exact same model of the other RAM you already have, make sure its the same speeds, timings, all that stuff
if it has 2x4 with no room for upgradeability, still look up your RAM to see if its anything special, probably not, but better to always check
otherwise you can just get 2x8 SODIMMs
Ok my Ram Configuration is only 1 stick of 8GB, 2400MHz DDR4.
The problem is Dell sells an OEM Part for $100+, im not buying that.
Either take out the module and read the model number off the sticker or download CPU-z and check the part number in the SPD tab.
Having two modules is indeed better since you will then run dual channel giving you almost double the bandwidth. But don't expect any of your games to get a meaningful performance improvement due to this.

> download
> click on memory tab for further info (because timings are nice to have).
> probably just end up with some super compatible Ram anyways, i.e. Kingston valueram, which will cost you around 80+ USD (or ~50 used).
Bit elaborated:
Only go for 12 GB (4+8) if you don't care too much about Ram bandwith, like i do on my Laptop (i don't game on it), but considering you play games, just go for dual channel (no async dual channel, meaning 2 Ram sticks with same size and similar latency).
12g = 8+4g so-dimms
its the hybrid dual ch mode, 8g (2x the smallest dimm) at dual ch speeds
and the remaining ram in single ch speed
with 16g, it should have 2x 8g dimms for dual ch, or a single 16g dimm, which you can add another in the future if/when needed
no motherboard with 4 slots have 2 dual channels. It is that 2 slots are channel A and the other 2 channel B.
So only 2 channels with 2 slots connected to 1 channel.
Also there is a difference with 2x8 and 4x4 GB RAM. I have proven it last month as well as others. The issue is, that 2 modules are way easier to handle for the memory controller then 4 modules. With 4 modules the respond times and read and write speed drops.
Heres my info on the memory tab

You can probably buy it cheaper somewhere else. Google the model number to look for a cheaper seller.
But its better to buy the same ram I have on my laptop right now then buying lets say this
