Win 10: 50% RAM usage when idling
Hey guys,
I recently noticed that my PC uses a lot of RAM when idling, even right after startup.
If I add up all the programs listed in the task manager the machine uses about 1.5 - 2 GB of RAM which sounds reasonable.
For some reason more than 4 GB of my 8 GB are used though, which leads to a lack of available RAM when playing RAM-intensive games.
Is there any way to find out what causes this problem?

Here are some screenshots of the task manager:

My system:

Windows 10 64 Bit
8 GB DDR3 RAM
i5 4670 3,4 GHz
RX 480 4 GB

If you need more information just tell me.

Thanks!

Its normal, and its nothing

make sure to set a generous page, static on ssd, because you will feel page file resizing even on ssd, and windows 10 is aggressive on paging, even with 32GB which is why I have such a huge static page file. and yes I'm abusive with the chrome tabs:lyn:

What ram intensive games are you playing, many games claiming 8GB use far less, its just the spec they require, windows will release ram as needed. That being said, its much nicer if you upgrade.

run a game that uses more than half your ram, if windows doesnt let go of ram then install windows 7
After observing this issue for some time, I noticed that after closing a game the overall RAM usage is at about 20% most of the time.
So everything seems to be fine.

CTRL + ALT + DEL -> Task Manager

Click on "Performance" (tab) -> Open Resource Monitor

Click on "Memory" (tab) and check the "Physical Memory" box.

Check the "In Use" vs "Standby". Windows uses memory and doesn't discard the DLLs from memory after that app/game has been exited. Rather it keeps them still in memory, but merely marks it as "Standby". When another game/app needs more memory it can request the "Standby" memory to be released to it.

You shouldn't worry about RAM being used up. It's the way it works these days, used memory is better than idle memory. Just make sure it's "Standby" memory and not the "In Use" memory slowly increasing over time (which in that case is a memory leak of one of your apps/games).
for me its lke 30%+ on the "In Use" thing

I'm only using %5, wait for it, wait for it, of 64GB, LOL, I just couldn't resist.
My windows 10 uses 2gb RAM without opening anything :/ (8gb RAM)

The 32 GB RAM setup only uses 2% lel

It uses around 8% with 32GB Of RAM. And about 15% with 16GB. No way 8GB should use 50%. When was the last time you re-installed windows?
My PSU died a few months ago and killed my MB.
Got a new PC with 16GB and everything's fine :steamhappy:

16GB is the sweet spot these days.
