Laptop fan suddenly loud and constant
Hi guys,

I own an hp envy x360 laptop with intel hd graphics 620.

Over the last week, my laptop fan gets very loud like its processing something difficult and constantly spins while in game.

I have tried everything to fix it: power settings for the laptop in general, in game graphics settings, laptop display settings, etc.

Should I set fan cooling in the system to "passive" in advanced power settings!
Should I go into Bios and disable "fan always on"?

What should I do?

If the fan is spiking like that, I would probably clean the vents out using compressed air before considering using passive cooling. The fans are there to cool off your CPU and GPU when they are in heavy use.

The envy wasn't rly designed for gaming..

The fans running more or less permanent to keep the laptop cool while playing games/doin demanding tasks.

And/or background updates or tons of apps are running.

Or maybe dust.

More info could also help, games, temps, specs etc.

This is a new laptop - 5 months old.

I wasn't having this problem before. The fan issues described above just happened suddenly in the last week to 10 days.

It is entirely possible that there is something running in the background that is using more resources that normal, open up your resource monitor and have a look at whats running (some details about resmon here[www.techrepublic.com] and here[techtalk.gfi.com]) or something a bit more flexible like process monitor[docs.microsoft.com] that will show you exactly whats running.

I also agree with the consensus, carefully shooting some canned air in the exhaust and seeing if any dust comes out would not hurt. I have personally disassembled some less than a year old and they were a bit clogged and heating things up. If you would like to disassemble there is a good example below the cpu fan is shown just after the 2min mark (best way to clean IMHO)

Hell no, you don't set the fan profile to passive (not that it would help BUT assuming there's nothing wrong with either your fan assembly or themometers, you are guaranteed to have this happen for a reason, namely your GPU or CPU is overheating)

You're gonna need to open that sucker up and clean the dust out, only thing you can do (and probably the root of your problems)

If for some reason you're getting GPU or CPU overheating where you are in a laptop environment you can guarantee it's all the dust and unmentionable particles getting clogged up in the tiny heatsinks of the thing.

isnt that normal for a laptop, since they're like to overheating easly. also turning off a fan is not a good idea, ur laptop will get more heat.

First, go to YouTube and find a video on opening your laptop. Open it up. Move fans have a grill to one side (usually left) where the air runs over it to cool your system down. DO NOT clean the fan while it is in the system. This can cause all sorts of dust to spew over your circuit board and kill it. (I did this once.) This means you will need to get some paste for the CPU/GPU to replace what is already there. You can find all sorts of paste at a good computer store. Usually costs $5.00-$20.00. When you remove the fan, have some clean cloths available. Wipe off the top of the CPU/GPU and the bottom of the heat sink. Then apply a small amount (about the size of a tear drop) onto both CPU & GPU. When you put the fan back on it will spread the drop. Also, look for a program called SpeedFan. You can control the speed of your fans with it. Later!

Then why are many people on the web saying I should go into BIOS and disable "fan always on"?

People are also saying that windows updates cause this problem for some reason.

Anybody know anything about this?

That is just normal. The cooling on the X360 is very weak and not meant for gaming at all.
It's made for basic home use and the cooling is made for those kinds of loads.

My son's HP laptop and my Lenovo (both a10-4500M) also overheats quite a bit, we both have one of these to help gaming in the summertime - Thermaltake Massive V20 laptop cooler[www.walmart.com], may be a good solution for you as well until you can resolve the problem.

I understand but

This only started recently. I've been using it like this for 5 months with no problem and now it suddenly does this (last 2 weeks).

And by the way, the games i am playing are very old (eg, lords of realm 3 is from 2004).

Well it could be there is dust in the cooling. 5 months is more than enough for it to clog up.
Same laptop. Same thing for me. I've blown dust out. I've reset the pc. Fans still blazing. Wasn't doing this a few weeks ago.
Oh and I don't use mine for gaming.
