DS4 Controller Getting Put to Sleep by Steam?
I've been using a DS4 controller on my PC for several steam games for quite a while. It seems to work very well, but for the past few months, I've been having an issue when on bluetooth, that the controller will appear to turn off (lightbar goes dark, no inputs).

However, it can't be turned back on without holding the PS button to ACTUALLY turn it off, then turning it back on.

If, while it appears to be off, you check the gamepad settings in Devices and Printers, there doesn't seem to be any received input...but going into Steam or Big-Picture's controller options, the controller works fine! Windows & games just see no input.

So, it would appear Steam is putting it into some sort of psuedo sleep state that it's controlling??

Does anyone have any clue on a fix for this? (I've already disabled all the different Steam controller support options and set "Turn off Controller" to "Never" in Steam)

Install and use DS4-Windows

I have used DS4-Windows in the past, but it seems silly to use it now when the controller works without it, just to keep Steam from screwing with it.
Just following up here, again. Still having this issue, tried using DS4 WIndows again, but it's original creator's abandoned the project a few years back, and while it's been picked up by another programmer, it's still having a few issues (i.e: exclusive mode no longer works on Win10, etc).

Additionally, DS4 windows makes the controller show up as an Xbox controller, even in games that normally have DS4 support. Which is not ideal.
I've had the xbox button prompts for years as I've always used a DS3 or DS4 on pc. With a little practice you get used to the xyab prompts and press the dualshock varient without a second thought. The worse to get used is the X prompt as DS has a x on it.

I had issues with my DS4 using Steams native support and went back to ds4windows. Was an issue with this too as Steam kept stealing access to controller from ds4windows.

Close steam and ds4windows
Unistall/remove wireless controller from devices.
Load Ds4windows
Pair your DS4
In setting section make sure hide ds4 is ticked.
Load steam

Always load ds4windows before Steam if you intend to use your ds4. The ds4 will connect fine after Steam was loaded provided ds4windows was loaded first.

You will need to get used to abxy prompts but that really won't take long. A few hours maybe.
It wasn't the promos that was the problem, it was, for games that actually support the touch pad on the ps4 controller, you lose that.

Also, the newest version of Ds4Windows on win10 doesn't seem to actually work in exclusive mode...so yeah, it and stream fight for control.
Steam shouldn't "fight" you about anything, just disable all the controllers in BPM; you don't need any of that active if you're using something like DS4Windows

As Peabrain mentioned make sure the controller is paired to DS4windows, Hide DS4 is ticked and loaded before Steam is loaded. Also make sure all of Steams Controller stuff is turned off.

Aslong as Steam controller options are off and DS4windows is loaded before Steam the hide DS4/exclusive mode should work fine. Loading DS4windows and/or connecting a DS4 before loading Steam can screw it up needing you to use the small reset button on the back of a DS4 and need you to pair it again.

I have tried all this on multiple occasions, and I still can't get exclusive mode to work.
