If Direct X 12 Multi GPU ever becomes popular outside of Ashes of benchmark then any GPU works, without the need to SLI or Xfire.
Good point.

Biggest problem so far is that DX12 is being picked up by game developers way slower than anyone is expecting. Incredibly only 26 individual titles since late 2015 have DX12 support, and just 7 of them are exclusive so it means the rest are technically utilizing DX11 in the core. Things aren't looking good.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
What is your resolution and cpu?

For 1080p a gtx 1060 or 1070 / 1080 will be enough for 144hz or normal 1440p but you may need a bit more for 1440p 144hz like the 1080ti.

As for 4k gaming you won't be able to max settings in some of the more demanding games with current gen gpu's but it will be decent enough for a 1080ti as that's your only decent option last I checked for 4k.

I would hold off if you can for volta especially with the increased costs of gpu's because of the miners.

You can also look at amd's vega if you want but once again their prices are higher because of this issue plus last I checked nividia's are better for most gaming at equal price points.
I'm planning on using either i7-8700K or i9-7980XE. Expensive, but eh?
Haven't 100% decided on the monitor yet but it's either any of the following:
Acer Predator XB1 27inch WQHD G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Monitor
Acer Predator XB1 28inch 4K UHD G-Sync Gaming Monitor
Samsung C49HG90DME 49inch Super Ultra Wide Curved QLED Monitor
1440p
4K
1440p

Remember that Vulkan is also in the table. Until most popular game engines improves the API support (i.e. UE4, Unity, etc.),.games will keep coming out with older APIs. And when you get that, then you start to "see" some work for multi gpu rendering with Dx12 & Vulkan.

For nowdays (and upcoming years) I agree that the and SLI or Crossfire should only be take in account if and only if the user has some software that has support for it and he really needs that boost. Or in other words: this technologies should be in the end of the list of features that a gamer should be looking for in their rig.

8700K hands down...
Difference between 8700K and 7980XE?
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i9-7980XE-vs-Intel-Core-i7-8700K/m352013vs3937
Price?
The 7980XE is $2176 more than the 8700K, according to UserBenchmark.

Most of the productivity or machine learning software does not need SLI to utilise multiple GPU. SLI is mainly for gaming.

Not that beneficial in gaming. Other workloads, such as video rendering, maybe a little more useful, but not by a significant amount. Overall, it's not worth using at all.
Monk 2018 年 2 月 14 日 上午 2:06
The 7980XE is ONLY worth considering if you are made of money and NEED its cores for an actual professional workload where it will have an impact on your productivity and as such profitability over the next few years.
For hobby use it's daft.
It's also considerably slower unless you delid it, voiding the warranty, use a custom loop to cool it and overclock it to hell, and it will still be slower in most games than an 8700k.

As for sli, as an actual user, unlike the vast majority of those who say it doesn't work (oddly it seems to be those who don't use sli who seem to say it's awful not those that do), I'll say do not even consider it if it's with anything but the top cards, one stronger card beats two weaker ones the majority of the time
The second thing to note is not all games will support it, so only do it if you are happy to have a paperweight in some games.

With that all said, when it does work, it is glorious if you have a high refresh monitor to take advantage of the extra frames. But there can be issues where sli will create issues, these are very easily fixed, just disable sli in the settings for the game in question, the division at one time when new was such a game, it's since fixed and sli works well, oddly only on dx11 mode though ...

End of the day, it is expensive and won't always give any advantages beyond looking cool, I've had sli 980 and now 1080ti and I will very likely have sli 2080ti when it is released, but I know and accept the problems but as an enthusiast who simply wants the best possible performance I'm happy with the trade offs, if you can't be, don't even consider it.

SLI does work when it works and my 2 1080 ti's piad for themselves after a few months mining. If you have good GPU's you shouldn't have to put any cash in upgrading your rig.

Maybe for productivity and running multiple high resolution monitors. But for gaming? Not really, not all games support it.

i have personally found this to be not true so far. I have all cod titles, battlefield, microsoft flight, elite dangerous, fallout series and numerous others and have NEVER had an issue with any.

Agree, I run sli 1070's and almost every game I play uses sli, and there is a noticeable difference between one card and two. Unless you're playing old games that can get 144fps on 4x dsr with just one card, then it doesn't matter.

Ubisoft games don't support sli, pretty much everyone else does though.

That's not true, the big one that doesn't s unreal engine games as it lacks native support for it.
