As for comfort, the HD598s will be better as the DT990 pros do have a slight clamping sensation that you will become aware of the longer you wear them, note however than the DT990 Premiums do not and are as comfortable as the 598's (and the Premiums have a slghtly better build quality over the Pro's as well).
If all you care about is competative situational awareness, the go for the HD598s (they don't sound bad by any means but the 990s are more exciting/fun)
If you want the best gaming audio and most comfortable headset go for the 990 Premiums
Yes
Have you by any chance read this...
https://www.head-fi.org/threads/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-11-10-2017-sennheiser-game-one-added.534479/
theres some nice info on both headsets there.
It's a tough call, I had the DT990 Premiums before getting my hands on a pair of Sonorous VI's, despite this I don't do much in the way of competitive PVP style games and I've only used the 598's for a few hours at most as I returned them before getting the 990s, I've a lightly larger than average head and they just wern't that comfortable beyond 4 hours of use (with breaks).
It simply boils down to do you want the best headset for your money or the headset thats going to give you a slight edge in competative gaming, without spending more $$ a compromise is sadly on the table.
I honestly sadly could not quantify, the HD598s are more neutral and balanced offering a greater degree of seperation which makes specific sounds or instruments easier to define/detect, the 990s are more vibrant and exciting which offers a greater degree of immersion but less seperation. How much easier or better, is perhaps only decided by a first hand test.
Here in the UK we have a law called the "distance seller regulations" which allow you to order something by web or mail and return it in as new condition within 21 days, you only have to pay postage. Do you by any chance have something like this where you live, or are Amazon ok taking unwanted returns as I think it would be best if you could order and try both and return those you don;t want.
NP Kareem, nice talking with you, to be fair both are great headsets, I just hope you don't end up tossing a coin over which you keep :D
When you get headphones, it is best to go for a single specific use case more than anything.
If not, you may end up with headphones that are just okay all around, not particularly excelling in any category, and may disappoint.
Something to think about.
There is no Premium Version of the Beyerdynamic DT 990. There only 3 version: Pro, Edition and Manufactur. However the Manufactur is an Edition version while you can customize the parts like leather or Velour Earpads and select the color. Qualitywise by Sound it is an Edition.
The DT 990 is an open back ehadphones and as such not good for bass. its bass is even the worst of all 3 version (770, 880, 990). It advantage is the better soundstage but also has the same problem as the 770 (close back for bass) that the high pitches (like S) are hissing. The best of all 3 version but also the msot expensive is the DT 880 which espacially as 600Ohm version sounds superior to the other 2 if you soundcard can support them.
