If it's under 85C it's safe. If it hits 85C you may have a problem when the weather gets hotter. People always forgot room temp does affect CPU temp (and all other temp).

*Coughs* 49C outside temp just 3 weeks ago here.

Well, it's currently 28 Celsius where I live according to Google.

Well it depends on what you're doing at stock i dont like for mine to go above 65c not that it will hurt it just dont see why it should. Idle temps are around 27-32c.

For overclocking it depends if you are pushing those chips to the max you wanna stay under 90 if you can i doubt on 8700k youll see 100% in a game unless something is wrong with the game. At 5ghz you wanna try to stay in the 60's or 70's while playing cpu heavy games.

The new battlefront is oretty cpu heavy mine play in the high 60's to mid 80's just fine

To which none of that matters. What matters is airflow and cooling. As far as idle, averages... All that matters is parts not exceeding or nearing their max operating temp, which I wouldn't consider an issue under 85-90°C. Below that is fine and such temps shouldn't be seen anyways unless under full loads. Also is a huge difference with say 8700K, as that was an actual TDP of approx 140-150 watts, so it will require beefier cooling
A 6700K will typically idle between 30 and 40, with peak loads between 55 and 80c. I don't have hands-on experience with the 8700, but given it's a 100W TDP I'd expect much peak load temps.

My 6700K is OC'ed to 4.7 GHz and I'm only getting 35 Idle with 70-75 at maximum load.

I use a regular 6700, not the K version! :v

Then I'd expect the lower-end of the range I listed. That will of course vary depending on the cooler you fit, but you should have no trouble keeping it below 70. And anything below 90 is perfectly safe.

8700s have a higher temp range. They're a 100W Hexa, by extension they run pretty hot.
Did you try lowering your voltage in your BIOS? That can reduse heat generated.

Also what cooler are you using?

What's the temp are you getting on it for max load?

Where do folks get these non-sense TDP #'s from BTW?
You do realize rated is not the same as real-world actual? Most CPUs have the ability to go way higher then their initial stock advertised TDP rating :steamfacepalm: So if its a 95W CPU, stick on a cooler rated for about 150% of that, at least.
espacially since you can remove/raise TDP limits which most hardcore overclockers do anyways.

For my 5.2GHz OC on the 7700K I use a voltage of 1.39V and raised TDP limits to 120W. However temps are fine in Prime 95 with 73°C max temps.
My cooler is only 220w TDP :steamsad: I'm scared it gonna blow up my i7-6700k /s
