i7 4790k not faster than i5 4690k at gaming?
I currently have a i5 4690k and its a beast for it's age, it still outperformes any Ryzen at gaming in most games (aside from civ and ashs etc) and I was thinking that an affordable upgrade is if I get an i7 4790k but after watching a few videos and google benchmark results, it performes the same if not even less in some games. Why is this?

It shouldn't perform less unless it's bottlenecked by GPU, which I believe is the case there. Also, no, your 4690K doesn't outperform "any" Ryzen. The top end Ryzens will stump it.

Well if the game can't make use of the extra threads, it's not going to be faster at the same clocks.

Pretty sure my i5 beats or is just as good as the 1700x and thats the second best Ryzen CPU you can get atm..

So there would be no reason to upgrade to the i7 if the games I play dont utilise more cores. Does the i7 have the same single core performance as the i5?

Your i5 doesn't really beat the 1800X or the Threadrippers.
Older games you will not see much of a difference but 2017 started to change that with game engines that scale across more threads.

Okay so I should look at getting a newer gen cpu at maybe the 9th or even 10th gen whenever those comes out, when my cpu becomes slow due to just having lack of threads.
A 4790K shouldn't be performing less than a 4690K. If so, there is either a problem or you are looking at the benchmark wrong (like looking at a stock 4790K vs an overclocked 4690K). And if looking at that video, both recordings are not identical scenarios in every game, so variations in frame rate are to be expected.

Clock for clock, the 4790K should outpace the 4690K.

The 4790K has 8 threads (vs 4) and has 8MB L3 cache (vs 6MB). Not a huge difference, but a difference.

In real world performance, an upgrade from a 4690K to a 4790K would only really be noticeable in applications which are held back by the thread count. There are plenty of intensive games that can take advantage of the increase in efficiency from the extra threads.

Are you expecting a major increase in performance? Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but that isn't how it works. Games are mostly GPU dependent. CPU calculations are mostly for feeding the GPU data and processing stuff like AI and the likes. Stuff that isn't directly tied to frame rate values, unless it does fairly poorly and falls behind.

It is all about balancing your hardware.

No, it shouldnt because those cpus cost between 100-500 pounds MORE, let alone without the mobo and ram which cost more. Its the fact my old 4th gen cpu destroys the R5 and some R7 at gaming. They are 3-4 years newer and Ryzen's "Gaming" lineup and makes it seem stupid for me to upgrade right now.

I5 4690k is still a fairly decent CPU. But there are sevral CPUs now that will out perform it in games.
Basically it's up to you and how happy you are with how it run the games you play.

It also depend greatly on your GPU and monitor whether or not you see a perfomace difference.

ye okay thanks.
I was only wondering as Im going to get a new volta xx70 gpu whenever it gets released and wondered if my cpu would be a drawback and if a fancy i7 would help a bit but clearly not for the games I play and am planning on getting.

You said it outperforms ANY Ryzen... which is wrong. I never said anything about pricing, I was just talking about raw power. So do the thinking.

If anything, your 280X needs to go. Especially with that triple monitor setup, and you know it.

Then don't.

No one is forcing you to do anything.

Newer games Ryzen is coming ahead.

Well AC:O is showing the weakness of 4c\4t I see you like Far Cry and I would guess you will see the same with Far Cry 5.

It was generalising. Sorry I wasnt using specific words or numbers like 8/12 I didnt think it matter smh. What I mean was that it beat 8 of the 12 Ryzen CPUs and its old af.
