Yes I’m still running DDR3
Right now I’m running 1600mhz ram
Would it be worth upgrading to 2133 or 2400 ram. Would it be a noticeable improvement or money wasted

Thanks

Same boat here purchased some DDR4 for a future build.

No, not worth it. The improvements are barely even there for gaming if any (talking like up to 1-3 fps increase). Wait until you're upgrading to a new CPU becuase then you're forced to buy a new mobo and DDR4 rams.

money wasted , at least that's how it was when I bought
ddr3 2133 .... and compared it to my ddr3 1600 ram....

It did increase gaming a few fps , but not worth the price,
especially now ! Ram is very expensive ...

my opinion.......

This is more opinion from experience than anything, but Im running around 16k on 16gb (2x8) of ddr3 and I dont feel compelled to upgrade. Gfx card has 8gb (390x), and that seems to never peg out either. I livestream, game AAA on ultra (mostly, 1080p), and i have never had to "wait" on ram, or experienced lag due to ram. I re-encode video, design game levels, etc. I have also never seen my rig use more than 12G of my ddr3. So coming from someone with high expectations and a 4790k, I dont find it "necessary" until the market experiences a significant price drop in ddr4. Is it a "noticable" difference? Marginally, unless youre coming from the stone age. You would be hard pressed to max out your bandwidth and capacity consistently enough (ram) to warrant investment. IMHO of course...

Looks like I’ll be keeping my 1600mhz ram then. Thanks for the responses

I have a 4790k and am very happy with the performance. So probably won’t be upgrading for a while yet

Thanks

My secondary rig my GF uses daily for gaming is still running DDR2-800 (6GB, 2*2, 2*1).

I personally I have used that machine to play BF3/4 and 1, along with Fallout 4 and GTA-V...

Currently it cant play a few of those games but thats because the GPU has been swapped out so a friend could borrow it, and the machine is currently living with a DX10 class card (GTX-295). However I did test and play for extended periods all of the listed games when it was still equiped with an HD7870 (which it will be again soon).

Currently it still gets used daily for the likes of The Forest (Unity 4/5 engine) and L4D2, though those are obviously a bit lighter than the afore-mentioned games.

Capacity is > Speed for RAM when considdering gaming.

RAM is so expensive. Buying more when not necessary when you get a small performance increase is uneconomical. I have an i7-3770k machine with 32 GB RAM.

ALso I have spare DDR3 1600 Mhz 16 GB ( 4 sticks).
I am looking at maybegetting an X79 motherboard and a 6 core ivy-Bridge E CPU and overclock it.
It is more about the extra cores as more games engines are using them. Also the DDR3 will be in quad channel so not a bottleneck at all.
It seems a far less expensive option.

It depends on the application.

Back when I upgraded from 1866mhz CL9 to 2400mhz CL10, I did notice some applications having improvements. Nothing major, but still an improvement.

Don't forget about timings. Both speed and timing go hand in hand. You want your speed high, and your timing low.

Considering at the time the 2400 ram kit was only $80, and someone bought my 1866 kit for $50, I see it as a win.

Don't forget to factor in selling off your old ram.

If the improvement is marginal I might not bother. I’ll keep everything in consideration. I have a second pc that has no ram at the moment. So my old ram would go into it.

I have a darkrock pro 3 so ram options are limited due to height restrictions. I did find a low profile set of amazon (4 x 4gb) for 165 Canadian. 2133mhz

The theory is that memory speed will make a difference if overclocking. Digital Foundry states this in a video on i7 overclocking. They don't compare different ram but this video does.

But it could also depend on the gpu, mobo etc. Unless you have a 1080ti, your current gpu might be limiting the performance anyway.

Make sure you are paying attention to timings (CL or CAS).

So many people go swap a good 1600mhz CL9 kit for a 2133mhz CL12 kit, but don't realize that the math ends up with about the same latency, with only the 2133mhz winning out in frequency. Basically a side grade.

"money wasted" is a good description. be glad you don't have to buy ram these days.
MarioTwins 3/fev./2018 às 16:17
I found 16gigs of 2133 for 100 shipped. We will see what happens
(I have a second rig that will use my other set of ram)

Defintelly a waste of money. Memory is very very fast as it is. Granted the memory is faster. But the majority of what your game is doing while you are playing and what your CPU is doing is not tranferring data to memory. The difference between the fast memory is a few milliseconds here a few there . Most likely you would notice no difference or very little difference.
