GTX 1080 with 500W?
I've googled it and some people say that it's reccomended you have 630+ watts for a 1080 but I've seen a few forums that say 500W will be fine. Anyone tried this out?

If it helps, I have:
  • 10 USB slots, 2 used.
  • I5 4460
  • 4 fans
  • DSX 7.1 sound card

Likely things catching fire/exploding.

Caps failing, not that bad but when they do, your PC will stop working.
Will it stop working forever or just until I change the power supply?

Likely until you change the PSU because it's not a horrible unit.

So is it unlikely to damage my other hardware?

Well I can't say it'd be %100 unlikely for it to damage your other hardware, it isn't exactly an incredible PSU. Even if it was, there might still have been some risk. When PSUs go bad, there could always be risks of taking other hardware with them. But I'd guess likely not in your case.

Thanks. I'll try it and I guess I'll buy a new PSU if it goes bad.

I recommend a higher wattage PSU. 650W is adequate, higher if you're doing SLI.

As long as you don't have an absolutely terrible PSU, which you don't, then 500w will be fine for a single 1080.

Here I am running an overclocked 4790K and overclocked 1080, yet only pulling around 400w. You have a locked 4460. I think you'll be fine.

If not, nothing will be damaged. It'll just power down on you or crash. I recommend getting the gpu, then seeing if it'll work. No harm, no foul. If it doesn't work right, then upgrade your PSU. Though, I'd be willing to bet that it will work.

The only PSU that i can remember blowing up and catching on fire was the Diablotek and that was many moons ago. At Astro i like bigger power supplies too.

Why do so many if you recommend a PSU way more powerful than us needed and which would cost the op money he has no need to spend, I would highly recommend everyone buys a power meter, they cost about a tenner, then make a forum post station g how much you think your system pulls, then share how much it actually pulls, as I'll bet alot of you will be really surprised by how little your systems actually draw.

Pretty simple that rail that the graphics card is on needs to be a good one. A lot of lower wattage power supplies have terrible output on the GPU rail. Why waste a ten spot on a wattometer when it will buy a better power supply. Besides i like to jump start the car sometimes. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=cooler+master+power+supply+jump+strating+a+car&&view=detail&mid=AC7E90C4AA81C7F8AF20AC7E90C4AA81C7F8AF20&&FORM=VRDGAR

180W is for reference card, factory overclocked cards take more, up to 250W.

No.

Thats still not 250w but I will let it slide this time because your answer is good enough for me and they dont run the test on cards full of dust and cat hair like in the real world.

You clearly have no idea what you're going on about. There is no "rail" as you think that the power goes from on a PSU, it's not a train rail. Those rails you're talking about are nothing more than over-circuit protection trigger points. The power actually goes through other components like the transformer, DC-DC converters etc.

If the OCP set point is too low, your PSU will latch off and your system will shut down. However, that's not a case with most modern power supplies. Before you come up with more nonsense (like the jump starting a car wasn't enough), I'll link you to the review of the PSU, actually showing that it does not supply "terrible power", or let me rephrase that, "dirty power" in that case:

Why are you linking to the max power consumption of a card that he's NOT going to buy? It's not even available in most places, and almost nobody buys it when they can get away with other cards. They didn't even nickel plate that huge copper heatsink, what a cheap job for a card that's supposed to be top end.

If you run your PC full of dust bunnies and cat hair, you have other problems going on. Besides, your PC being dirty does not add up to your power consumption.
