gaming on a SD card

so i'm planning to buy a 64 GB sandisk extreme sd card (up to 90MB/s transfer speed) so i can play payday on it

can i actually do this? and if you're wondering, my laptop itself uses a SSD, so afaik transfer speed won't be much of an issue

If it can hit 90MB\s you'll be fine, even USB 3.0 HDDs can't hit that speed.

Whether Steam will let you install games on a SD Card is another story.

You can install games wherever you want, but SD cards are MUCH slower than external HDDs.
Words about acceess speed are pure marketing. Take note they said "up to 90 MBps". This means nothing at all.
Lets look at any specific SD card. Say, Sandisk Extrema Pro. Manufacturer claims it has read speed up to 275 MBps and write speed up to 100.
At the same time it certified to have C10 speed class (10 megabyte per sec garanteed) and U3 UHS Speed Class (30 MBps garanteed). See the difference?

The top listed transfer speed is usually the sequential read speed, which is rarely used by games, but great for the usual stuff SD cards are used for (large videofiles). Software lives and dies by random 4k read/write, which fortunately for you, a Sandisk SD card doesn't seem to be too poor at. But don't expect SSD or high quality HDD speeds.

My USB 3.0 HDD regularly hits 120 Megabytes per second...which is 960 Megabits persecond...

90 megabits per second is only 11.25 Megabytes per second.

Do not game on an sd card. They are slower, less reliable, and not designed for constant read/write which means you will significantly reduce lifespan even to the point it will die during your gaming session. Buy and external HDD or get a bigger/more internal space.
