I myself prefer Panda Antivirus combined with Malwarebytes.
If you really want to be sure you can always check files with https://www.virustotal.com
For some viruses, it's kind of like in vampire lore whereupon you let a vampire beyond the threshold/entrance into your home, they can keep visiting.
-I don't click on links I dont know
-I don't download from sides despite manufacturer sites
-I don't visit shady sites
-I don't connect drives to my PC I haven't checked before or know that they are clean.
Everything shady I do, I do in VM's
This^^ and my brain.
I buzz it down with a level 2 attachment. Haven't used a comb in over 18 years.
The protection is good + secured paypal banking browser thingy, auto blocking suspicious url's, great UI / simple and so on an only uses ~ 80 mb ram.
Running and doing scans quiet, like it's doesn't even exist.
But tbh for the home use, ms defender and common sense is enough.
Here is a good example:
Kaspersky Internet Security
(or)
MalwareBytes Premium
Well worth actually buying as it's...
Application control (works faster and better performance, for more control/security over what everything is doing, letting you accept or block activity), Anti-virus, Anti-script, Anti-banner, Anti-spam, Anti-phish, Firewall, Vurnablility scanner (checks third party apps for security warnings/updates), Privacy Protection, Webcam access detection, and Safe Money (security layer for web-browsing payment gateways isolating it from keyloggers, etc).
Check AV Test or similar:

Sort by protection as well as performance.
Kaspersky Internet Security version 18.0 (64 bit):
