I've used a DS3 and DS4 controller for years using SCP toolkit and DS4Windows to have them work and the ABXY prompts in gamescan be confusing at first. After time you get used to knowing which ABXY prompt means which Circle, Square, Triangle and X button. The ony really confusing prompt is X as both formats use it but again with practice it will be second nature to press the correct button.
Just keep playing with the controller and youll get used to it or buy new controller, ideay with ABXY button configuration as even with PC and Steams support for DS4 not all games will give playstation style prompts.
As I said counter-intuitive.
And even in 1440p, it's sometimes hard to know if it is a 3, a 5 or an 8.
I'd be content with ABXY prompts, but the generic ones are quite hard to learn.
Maybe use the PS4 option

this guide is somewhat older and you can also access gamepad configurations on settings in the regular client nowadays.
if its a non-steam game you can try to configure a 360 for "desktop" and it will work as long as steam is running.
