Optiplex 980 cpu upgrade
Im using a optiplex 980 with an i5 660. My gpu is a gtx 750 ti.
I wanted to know if I could swap my cpu with a Xeon X3460 because its the same socket type. I dont know if dell put any restrictions on what cpu the optiplex can use but I want to get the xeon because the price beats the $80 i7 870.

Likely not.

It looks like the 980 line tops out with an i7 975 if you wanted...

They are nto expensive either, seems they cost about $100 USD used...

With the slightly slower 965 running closer to 70.

The i7 975 uses socket 1366 and the i5 660 uses 1156.

Thats a different socket type. Mine is lga1156.

Admitadly, I didnt check his CPU, just marked it off in my head as first gen core-i series and went on..

Took the Dell Rep at this URL at his word. Person here is questioning about the SFF version, but they share the same baseboard and stats for CPU support, and the Dell Rep says that the 980 optiple line supports these CPU's...

https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-General/Dell-Optiplex-980-SFF-Processor-Upgrade/td-p/4105735

This is in direct contradiction to the manual. The OP in the linked Dell support thread clearly refferances teh manual and the Dell rep corrects him (apparenlty incorrctly) that he has support byond the 2.93Ghz 870.

According to this manual:

https://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/optiplex-980-tech-guide.pdf

Page 11, you are limited to the i7-870.

Either way, I think the original question has been answered and it is likely no.

Good news is its even cheaper, going for about 60 bucks...

Here is an idea of the performance difference. Ignore GPU scores, focus on Physics, CPU, and Combined score. The combined is especialy important as it shows how well the CPU can feed the GPU while both are under heavy load... Kinda like a game ;)

I know about all that, I just wanted to get a cpu that wouldnt bottleneck my gpu much or at all. I was planning on buying the i7 870 in the first place but I just wanted to know if I could save any money and get a slightly worse cpu. The cpu is the last upgrade im going to do to this computer then im just gonna get parts for a whole new build. I've been using this 750 ti for 4 years now and its almost time for an upgrade but not right now with inflated gpu prices.

I don't think it's worth upgrading this machine.

You will be better off selling it and building something new.

Then why not just wait it out for everything? Unless your Xeon is already failing in some horrible way, every dollar you waste now is another dollar you won't spend on getting the latest hardware later.

I dont have an xeon, I have a i5 660 which is only a dual core. and the i7 870 is only $50 so I dont have to work for 10 years to pay it off.

Yeah totally, should I buy a $1000 1080 ti? seems fair

I never said anything about a 1080 ti.. If you grab a low-end Ryzen 3 CPU it will already be a massive upgrade.

Too bad...

You have AMD to thank for multicore comsumer cpus (first consumer dualcores)...

You have AMD to thank for consumer 64bit cpus (first consumer 64bit cpus).

Fwiw you have AMD to thank for a number of other firsts as well... Such as first to 1Ghz (both for cpu and gpu) and first to 1Tflop (both single card (3870x2) and aingle gpu (4870/90))...

AMD has also historically shown itself to be far more pro-consumer than any of the competitors...

Just saying...

I find it highly unlikely for a CPU to go boom 4 seconds after it is turned on.
