Trying to upgrade my rig a little plz help
Hey everyone so I have a stock computer and I am trying to upgrade it piece by piece. A friend is giving me a new processor and I need help seeing what motherboard and or parts I need to change to be able to use the newer processor. I'll post my specs plz help and keep in mind budget is low to nothing.

My current Specs:
HP Pavilion 550-153w Desktop PC(slightly modded with GTX GeForce 1050ti)
MOBO: Memphis2-S
Current Processor: Intel Core i3-4170
Memory: 6gb Type: DDR3-1600
Hard drive: 1 TB Rotational Speed: 7200 rpm
Memory card reader: 7-in-1 multimedia card reader
PSU: 550w (upgraded that too.)

PROCESSOR IM TRYING TO ADD:
Intel® Core™ i7-6700K Processor <(Givin to me free so I want to use instead of buying another.)

Ok so what Motherboard or parts from my current setup do I need to change to use the newer processor?

I put together a wish list but won't be able to get the gear so I gotta improvise.

The wishlist I was hoping to get: http://a.co/ahYFKpR (welcome to help with the wishlist or advice plz.) I don't expect anyone to buy it. lol

Unfortunately it's going to cost you a couple hundred pounds / dollars to make use of it, get a budget z170 board, no need to be fancy so cheapest you can find to get up and running, but a Z over a slightly cheaper b board will be worth it to make use of the unlocked chip, you'll then need a heatsink, so the cheap and cheerful coolermaster 212 will do the job for a mild overclock, finally, the most expensive part will be the RAM, 8GB of DDR4 as cheap as you can find it basically, don't worry if it's a single stick, the performance difference is so tiny it's a non issue really, especially when it's down to how cheap can you go.

you don't have any money, but here is a list of random items? okay... what am i missing?

Your best bet would be to trade it for a i7-4690K or a i7-4790. Those 2 CPU's say they will work on your board but it doesn't list the 4790K so make sure it's not a K version 4790. I'm sure you will find someone, maybe look on ebay or post on a classifieds.

That's your option uness you have money to buy a new mobo & ram.
do not buy 6th gen intel core as the newer 8th gen is faster for almost the same price.

if you got the 6th gen i7-6700k,pair it with a Z270 mobo and DDR4 memory.

the processor I'm getting is being given to me free so i mostly want to build with that because changing out a motherboard is cheaper?

no what u need to know is that pc arent like cars, if you are going to replace the whole mobo then might as well just buy a new box. and start from there. think of it as a little project.

He's upgraded the GPU and PSU and is getting a 6700k for free, once he buys a new mobo and ram for it (plus heatsink) he will have a nice little system and way cheaper than buying a whole new rig that isn't needed.

yeah he is going to do it piece by piece. but working on a prebuilt is so https://i.imgflip.com/s5vmc.jpg

ok so with the help of a commenter here I think I was able to find one I can use. I added it to the top of my Amazon list so I won't forget. :)
Your friend doesn't happen to have a suitable motherboard too?

The i7 6700K need a fitting motherboard, Z170 or Z270 for overclocking but other 100 and 200-series are fine if you don't overclock it too. It can use DDR3L if it's on a motherboard which support that but shouldn't be used with DDR3 which you have now so you really should have both a 100 or 200-series motherboard and some DDR4 RAM for it too.

As for PSU and form-factor of motherboard I'm too lazy to check. If you don't have a cooler for the 6700K and just have the stock cooler for your old processor then getting a decent cooler even if it's a $25 one is likely a good idea too.
