GPU for Workstation/gaming desktop
Hi there,

With help from the awesome forum users on here, I built a system using their advice, about 3 years ago.
Now that I have started an Engineering study, I need a GPU upgrade for CAD usage.
This is my current system:

CPU: i7-7700K
GPU: 1050Ti
MEM: 8GB DDR4 2666MHz (will be upgrading to 32GB along with GPU)
PSU: Corsair CX550M

I have seen some good temporary deals around, as following:
RX 5700 (non XT) €360,- (MSI Radeon RX 5700 MECH OC)
RX 580 €200,- (Sapphire Radeon RX 580 8GB NITRO+)

I'm using Autodesk Inventor 2020 for modelling.
I also like to play BeamNG.Drive, Assetto Corsa, Space Engineers and Cities: Skylines in my free time.

Which one should I take? or are there some other options? (Team Green or Red doesn't matter for me)

Thanks in advance!

Budget and country?

My budget is around €400,- and I live in the Netherlands

Many are picky about gpus.

Most CAD will want an Nvidia gpu.
Best bet is a 2060 Super or better.

Get a better PSU like a Corsair RMX 650w

I'm using Autodesk Inventor 2020, working in assemblies with over 75 parts

The 2060 Super is also a good option, thank you :)
Though the RX5700 is a really tempting offer for this price. What do you mean by 'picky about GPU's'?

Look at what the cad app recommends. For as long as I can remeber, cad programs have always favored nvidia gpus.

Autodesk has a forum for each of their apps, you should ask your question there as you can an get answers from the devs.

Anyway, for what I can see, inventor doesn't use GPU for computation:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/full-use-of-multicore-processor/idi-p/3744575/page/4#comments

This means that you should probably choose your GPU based on games performance.

Thanks for your answer! Though I have seen my 1050Ti max out in some situations, especially when working with parts with many rounded features.

There seem to be some issues with AMD drivers indeed. Not only in CAD programs, but also in games I like the drivers don't seem to be working properly.
I think I am going for the 2060 Super (Gigabyte Windforce OC), at a price of €420. It also seems to be running cooler and more efficient, so thats a plus...

Thank you for your help!

You want an Intel i7/i9 or Ryzen 7/9
At least 32gb 3200 ram
RTX 2060 Super or better
Couple ssd also helps.

I think 2060 super is a good choice. I got a 2070 and upgraded from a 1050 ti. Huge difference. 1050 ti wasn't really lacking too much because I play older games but the 2070 is more than enough for the games I play. I love to use the CUDA feature of the card. I record my gameplay like that and when I encode movies the programs run the card up to 99% usage and I love seeing that because the encodes go QUICK.

So my Gigabyte 2060 Super arrived, I installed it, no problems.
But when I ran a stress test, (Furmark) one fan starts to rattle at medium fan speed, around 50-60%.
It is also present when playing games.
I've searched around on several forums, and most of the answers are "the fan bearing may have gone bad". This shouldn't be very likely for a card that hasn't even been used for 1 day, or is it?

When you hear that, is the fan wobbling around or is it stable? If it's stable and just making noise a little bit of WD-40 should fix that.

I would just return the card and get a new one

The fan is stable, it is a problem that was also present on my previous card (1050Ti also from gigabyte), but it was a lot less loud so i didn't care.

Where exactly would I apply the WD-40?

Sorry not WD-40, some machine oil would probably be better.
