MSI laptop overheating issue
Hello everyone, I am pretty new on those steam discussions so be kind please :steamsad:
So i got an MSI GS63VR 6RF stealth pro last year and i am really happy with, but the problem is that i recently got some overheating issues: when playing PUBG my gpu and cpu temps would rocket up to 89-93 degrees and that is really discomforting for me as i know that those temps can be dangerous for the hardware (despite the fact that i am getting sometimes random crashes in game). Moreover i sometimes get high temps even on idle like right now: gpu and cpu at 62 degrees ( cpu usage 10% and gpu 3% )
Have you guys got any suggestions please? thanks a lot.
My specs:
processor: intel 6th gen core i7-6700HQ
graphic card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5
ram: 16 GB DDR4
storage: 128 gb SSD + 1TB HDD
What i have tried: cleaning the fans, undervolting the cpu, updating all drivers (including bios), getting a cooling pad, cleaning unecessary files and background processes. Repasting is not really a solution as i will have to disassemble the laptop entirely because of how difficult it is to get to the cpu and gpu on that model so i prefer not to do it...

Change your power setting to Balanced and adjust the max CPU usage to 75%.

You can also change out your thermal paste to something like Arctic 5 or Diamond. Cheap stuff, you can buy a single tube for under 10 bucks.

Do it anyway.

hi, recently i've got a new MSI laptop (thin Stealth series), so currently trying to set it up.

i've read that it's recommended to lower the voltage on CPU to reduce the heat, should i just to that in BIOS or there are any recommended utilities. maybe any other recommendations for CPU?
Well i am very late didn't open steam for a while but i will try to answer you anyway hoping that i can help you.
I personally got a drop of 15C in temperature using throttlestop to undervolt my cpu i would definitely recommend you to do that. My cpu is undervolted to -145 mV.
i don't know about your version but in mine you can't undervolt using the BIOS you can just do it using a third party app i personally chose throttlestop.
thanks for the answer, i'll try to undervolt via Throttlestop.
It is a thin and light laptop and you don't expect to run at desktop cool. On laptop, it is running at 70 -80 is normal while playing games. my msi has been doing the same thing for 5 years now and non of the component has been broken except the hinge is a bit loose.... I am even running their GE gaming laptop which is a mid range. If your laptop is slow, you can have few things to do:
1) check msi for bio update, usually have a better fan setting in bio
2) consider clean you laptop fan, also be sure to purchase a cooling pad, it will help at most 10degrees in this case
3) tune down the game setting a bit. usually new update will demand more processing power which in turn slowly make you feel slower.
4) update Nvidia driver as well as windows update as it may run more efficient to help same task with less computation power

overall the thin and light is best to use with a external gpu or external cooling solution like cooling pad as I mentioned. if you want much better cooling, you need the GT or GE provide you a bit thicker and more heat pipes and powerful fan to help your cooling
thanks for the suggestions. i have lowered a bit CPU voltage but so far everything is working fine (i have a cooling pad at home and use it, when running games or some processing).
Hi, I have a smilar problem but as the Laptop got old already anyway I am about to buy a GE73 VR 7RF Raider.

So
1) is this a good choice ? :P

But seriously
2) it was mentioned above that turning ON VSync can cool your computer....why is that?? I thought Vsync is something that you turn OFF when you experience lag etc.

But it actually is LESS affecting the hardware?!

Cause Vsync will cap the fps to the refresh rate and thus not push the gpu as hard
So in fact it makes the game look BETTER and affects the GPU in a positive way?

But performance MUST get worse, why would anyone not turn on Vsync then?

I always thought I need to turn it off for better performance/to counter lag!
