You can run any GPU you want, period.
Will you get the full GPU performance on those specs? Of course not since that CPU is just terrible at best and shouldn't be paired with GPUs above a GTX 980 or 1060 6GB

You're not even getting your full CPU performance since you are running that CPU on such a low quality board with a much older Chipset that was never designed with AMD Bulldozer / FX series in mind.

Of course you can.

Yes but you will be bottlenecked by the CPU.

Fact is until GTX 1060 6 GB the CPU won't hold you back so much, over that GPU the CPU would hold your PC back from 30% to 50% or more depending by the GPU.
A 1080 would be handicapped from 35 to 40% compared to newest 6 cores CPUs.

Ya sure it'll work.

Some games your FX8320 will bottleneck the GTX1080, some only a little and some not so much.

I put a GTX1070 on my FX8350 because I couldn't afford the GTX1080 other wise I would've got the GTX1080.

Ps, there is no set in stone how much individual games will be bottlenecked by the cpu so don't buy into that crap each game will be different.

An idea of where you're heading ^.

One of the reasons I asked is that I just bought a new monitor, ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q, and am playing my games, Skyrim, and SSE at 2560 X 1440. Playing at this resolution I started to get stutter and believed it was due to my graphics card, a GTX 970 4gb.

From the sound of the replies, for which I thank you people, it is probably not my so much my GPU but pretty much my rig in general.

As I can work out the stutter with a little tweaking I believe I will leave well enough alone for now and start saving so I can build an integrated rig with every component complementing each other.

As it took me almost a year to save up for this monitor I will probably be able to do so by the time TESVI comes out.
