And that's 20 minutes on my clock.

I remember having exactly this conversation with Cloud Boy about two years ago. I'd bought a GTX1080 and he laughed at me for pairing it with a 144Hz monitor, saying a 1080 couldn't possibly play "new games" at 1440P and Ultra. He even angrily accused me of lying, and threatened to find benchmarks to prove me wrong. He didn't provide any then, so I'm a skeptical whether any will be forthcoming now.

As far as i can remember, i gave the benchmarks that time 2 years ago. And i have shown the benchmarks this time too. So, you are wrong.
Wait a minute, i am searching that 2 year thread, should be in my past comments list, to prove you lier once again, remember you dig up this, so it is on you.

Also my benchmarks has nothing to do with OP or this thread. i have shown the benchmarks to ''ugafan'' because he has asked for it.

Answer me this: What is this in service of? What are you trying to ellucidate?

I agree ^ with Cloud as far as it depends on the game, I don't play Deuce Ex MK and probably won't but I've been testing out Rx 580 and the GTX1060 6GB to decide which one I'll keep but it's falling so much on the individual game. GRW is definitely a GTX1060 game but DOOM is an RX 580 game but either way there's always games that come along and slap the mid range GPUs around.

If OP hasn't decided yet I believe he should top out his cpu with the i7 7700k for now and the next years to come then see what next gen or next gen after that gpus have to offer.

Ps, the i5 7400 has 4 cores 4 threads and clocks in at 3GHZ, the i7 7700k although not able to overclock it dominates with 4 cores/ 8threads and 4.2GHZ that's 1.2 GHZ (1200mhz) more raw speed than the i5 7400, sounds like a no brainer to me.

And really B450 + Ryzen 2600 may be available for almost the same price and then you have another two cores and your old mobo + cpu is still useful.

He has HP premade with small uATX motherboard, that means crap small case with bad ventilation and limited upgrade options plus some trash PSU that can just about hold up the GTX 1060. Not really good option to start swapping out motherboards and using more powerful graphics cards.
i7-7700K and 2x8 GB 2400 Mhz DDR4 RAM is pretty much all you can do with it without going into too much hassle that would leave it better to just build entirely new PC.
Those small-form-factor premade PCs are bad choice when considering upgrade options for future.
Irrelevant since its still about the same price and microatx boards is a thing.

your cpu is fine for now
you would gain verry little by upgradeing it
keep saving for a better gpu
